What do you think are the advantages and disadvantages to the computer buyer when using one of the free?

Q. operating systems such as google chrome and linux rather than windows?

A. i don't know about linux
but google chrome was designed to be fast
A great OS for something like net books that are only really good for watching videos and social networking
so it woulnd;t be able to do much in the way of gaming or high demand software

that was the last time i herd about google chrome a while ago it might be different now

What do you think are the advantages and disadvantages to the computer buyer when using one of the free?
Q. operating systems such as google chrome or linux rather than windows?

A. 1 If the computer already comes with Windows, there's no point in wiping it to install a free OS (although that is what I would do)

Pros:
It's free :)
There is a large and supportive community for some linux OSes (if you're willing to learn a little bit)
Linux is highly customizable
There is a lot of cool effects available for some GUI's
Most of the software is free open source alternatives to Windows software
Any one can modify the code of software to improve it
Little to no virus problems, I have no antivirus installed
Being made easier all teh time

Cons:
Can be difficult to migrate from windows
A lot of things are difficult to do (although constantly being made easier)
Some Windows software can be difficult to get working in linux
Software is open source so anyone can modify/look at the code (pro or con)
Difficult to choose a good distro
A lot of command line typing

All in all migrating to linux is a good strategy if you want to save a few hundred $ and are really willing to learn. If you want everything to just work the same then save yourself the anger and just pay out. If you really are willing to learn however there are many people who will help you get started with linux.

What do you think are the advantages and disadvantages to the computer buyer when using one of the free?
Q. operating systems such as google chrome or linux rather than windows?

A. Windows = lots of easy to install software, not very reliable(frequent crashes/freezes), is slow, tracks everything you do and sends it to microsoft(really!)

Linux = Fast, very stable(almost no crashes/bsod's), the new "package-installers" make installing software easier than it used to be, no help(use well maintained forums to get help), no behind the scenes data collection, stick to the popular versions(called "distros")

Chrome = coming out soon, Google's OS. Since it is google it is all spyware. Supposed to be fast, designed more for netbooks and using "cloud storage" to give you unlimited storage space on google servers for free(until you are hooked, then they will begin charging you to access your own data). All of the data you store will be scanned for unlicensed songs, films, kiddie porn, etc. If they find any expect a visit from the Man and a lawsuit from Sony Music.

Best sloution: dual boot Win XP sp3 and Ubuntu Linux, then you can have both while you learn more about linux, slowly phase out windows use. With the new Ubuntu you can access your WIN files! See youtube vids for dual boot tutorials

When is Google going to release a real version of Chrome OS?

Q. Not Chrome OS Linux, or from Hexxah, but from Google itself. So far you can only get it if you buy a Chromebook. When is Google going to let us buy a cd or download it? Nothing else is working for me, but Joli OS is a close second.

A. I don't think they will because they want people to buy Chromebooks "...the way you will get Google Chrome OS is by buying a Chromebook that has Google Chrome OS installed by the OEM." http://www.chromium.org/chromium-os/chromium-os-faq but you can also try EasyPeasy http://www.geteasypeasy.com/

What do you think are the advantages and disadvantages to a computer buyer when using one of the?
Q. free operating systems such as google chrome or linux rather than using windows?

A. Windows - people are more accostmed to using windows, it is the business preferred OS.
Linux - Ubuntu - less then user friendly to configure and setup, but stable.
Chrome - new, never used it myself, can't make any suggestions on it....

I use a wireless hotspot for internet. How do I get Linux to connect to this hotspot?
Q. My ISP supports Windows, and the Mac OS, but not Linux.
I know that Chrome book's are Linux basically, but the machine is supported. I want to simply install Linux on a machine I already own, and connect to my hotspot.

A. Hi
Trustthebear69
He is asking about linux.
"Many ISP wireless will not give this information out to people."
To find your wireless key if not on the router just google "web interface for your router make" ie web interface netgear router
Log on to your router using the default user and password and you will find the information.

"My ISP supports Windows, and the Mac OS, but not Linux."
This means that the ISP will not offer advise on Linux.

As long as linux distro detects your wireless chip in your pc then it will connect when you select the name of your router and supply the security wireless key.

Google for the forum of your Linux Distro for instructions.

What do you download from the chrome store to be able to get java?

Q. I have an Acer Chromebook and i want java for like oovoo and some other apps. I understand you download the Linux java download. But when i download that it says i have to download an app that can open java. What is that app called?

A. Chrome devices have Flash support built-in, but they do not support Java or Silverlight. If you need Java, Silverlight, or other plug-in support, there are virtualization and remoting options you can use for Chrome devices. See the chapter on Remote Access and Virtualization in the Chrome Devices for Education Technical Planning Guide: http://www.google.com/support/enterprise/static/chromeos/docs/admin/en/chrome_devices_for_edu.pdf

What are the benefits of using Google Chrome and what are the benefits of using Internet Explorer 9?
Q. My friend told me to switch over to Google Chrome, which i did. I am a Internet Explorer user and I upgraded Internet Explorer to version 9 and it seems like its the same as Google Chrome. What would be the benefits of the two?
Well internet explorer 9 too shows most visited web sites and is insanely fast lol. I guess one point would be security since internet explorer is a widely used browser.

A. Firefox 4 is even faster than IE and Chrome, over 9 million downloads in two days and it's available for Windows XP, which IE 9 isn't.

Chrome and IE isn't nearly as customizable as Firefox, Firefox has tens of thousands of add-ons, persona, themes etc.

Another great thing is it's available for Windows, OS X and Linux, one can auto-sync so all versions of Firefox are the same across different hardware. :)

Also with Firefox you don't have to worry if Microsoft, Apple or Google is spying on you, the code is open for people to see. (and improve on)

And Firefox with add-on's runs extremely fast on single core computers with 2.3 GHz and a mere 512K of RAM under Linux, so the "memory" issues is because of Windows bloat, PC vendor installed junk and anti-malware, not Firefox.

I use Windows in VM all the time, it always needs more memory than anything else I run. Nearly 2GB, that's with the eye candy turned way down. Just about all new Windows PC's today need their RAM bumped up right from the gate, especially after updating.

How do you get the task bar/start menu to stay when on google chrome?
Q. My taskbar is on auto-hide. Whenever on my desktop, it shows when i move the mouse to the bottom. But when i'm in google chrome, it won't show when i move to the bottom and it's really frustrating because i'm constantly switching between programs. How do I fix it w/o changing my taskbar to lock? I like it at auto-hide.

A. Are you using Microsoft Windows or Linux either a MAC? If you working on Windows this might be an issue with the system. Not with a Google Chrome whatsoever.

Q. operating systems such as google chrome or linux rather than windows?

How can I make google chrome save more than 1 week of history?
Q. Like some option or add on that would allow chrome to save up to months of history would be awesome.

A. It actually saves the last 10 weeks and there is no way to change it.

This article applies to the Google Chrome browser on Windows, Mac, Linux, and Chromebooks.

Use the History page to view a list of websites you've ever visited in the last 10 weeks while using Google Chrome in standard mode. This page doesn't store pages from secure websites, those you've visited in incognito mode, or those you've deleted from your browsing history.

what are the downsides of using a linux machine vs windows?
Q. im thinking about going to linux, but what about games and programs? will they still work on linux? what are some problems or downfalls with linux?

A. You do not need knowledge of command line stuff.
No the programs you are talking about will not work.
Games especially! Several do. Go to wine HQ and crossover Linux to get a list.
You do not need any windows programs as there are alternatives and more of them. Most of them are better and all are from a trusted source. They are accessed via a program that accesses a 'repository' ran by Ubuntu (for example). This means no downloading viruses. No viruses is a huge feature.
You are going to have to go to google for lists of programs because it is just too much to list.
Actually here are some for you. The first one is a list of programs that you use from the command line. You wouldn't use these unless you were interested in programming or running a computer the professional way. It is good to be able to use some of them. typing df tells how much free space is on your file system and typing du lets you know where all your memory is used (which files or directories are what size). As you can see it is very good to know some. The second one is daemons which are background processes. The others are real applications.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux_programs
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Unix_daemons
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_GNOME_applications
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_KDE_applications
Web browsers:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_web_browsers_for_Unix/Linux

Ubuntu really is the best operating system available. If you want to play games get a PS3 and a keyboard, put linux on it, connect to the web and play to your hearts content then have the full entire functionality of a PC!
People are scared because they think you get what you pay for and they are correct except when companies start getting power hungry, controlling, abuse the trust of consumers and blatantly break consumer laws etc. People fight back. I would normally tell you about a few of the most hacked devices ever and the pattern of behaviour that leads to this happening. But I have to leave.
Read a little about Linux and why it works. The experts make it then we all use on it out different machines and tell them what is wrong. They fix it. Some of us like the whole idea and join them in one way or another. I can't wait until I am good enough a programmer to get more involved. You can even just post good ideas. If you use Firefox 3.5 you will see that it has some features 'borrowed' from Google Chrome. Someone used Chrome and said we want that. I asked for some features to be added to Ubuntu the other day and voted on some ideas already posted. The most popular are the ones the programmers try to produce. etc etc etc

That is how it works. Linux (and Unix) GNU and some of the 'utilities' have been around for 20 years and more and started their lives in Universities. There are over 1 million contributors to Linux and Unix worldwide.

You usually get what you pay for. So if you get Linux do what you can to help and promote it.

try this first - you need 5GB spare disk space - it uninstalls completely in a minute or so!

How do I block websites on my computer?
Q. I use Google Chrome. On a linux machine, though I doubt that's relevant.

This ear I am taking 8 different senior highschool courses, and I have a habit of aimlessly looking for funny things on the internet. I need to block my favorite websites until I'm in good habits. Like putting a padlock on the fridge when you know your weakness.

A. First of all âhostsâ is the name of the file not the folder. Please refer to the screenshot above.

Ok, letâs start from the first step. When you typed
notepad %windir%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts in the run command, were you not able to see the file named âhostsâ getting opened in notepad?

If not, then copy the hosts file from other computer to your targeted computer at the location %windir%\system32\drivers\etc
