where would i hav to look for downloading linux graphics drivers?

Q. i have a laptop. Currently running fedora10 linux. i'd like to run c++ graphics programs in it.
where would i find suitable graphics drivers for linux. pls help.

A. there are lots of websites, and btw which graphics card you have, check in their website, you will most probably get it.

How do I download Linux onto my PS3?
Q. I understand that you can download other OS's onto your PS3,but how do I that? Once I go to "Install other OS",then what?

A. You have to download Linux on a computer and make an ISO and put it on a cd. Then, you partition your hard drive on the PS3 and install it. You cant just download it onto the hard drive and use it.

What is the best version of linux to install on an older computer?
Q. I have an old desktop from a family member. It only has 128mb RAM and that's the most it can take. It's a 500 MHz I think. What's the best Linux I can put on here? Ubuntu requires 256 mb of RAM.

A. With your specs. As has already been suggested its really a choice of Puppy Linux or Damn Small Linux. You could take a look at Linux Mint 4.0 Fluxbox. If you wanted to go retro. you could install Windows 3.11

Download Linux Mint 4.0 Fluxbox http://www.linuxmint.com/rel_daryna_fluxbox.php

Download Windows 3.11 http://www.sirendesign.net/ernweb/redmond311.shtml

Is it possible to download Linux with a CD?

Q. I have an extremely old Windows laptop that can't go on the internet (it's modem doesn't work). I want to download Linux on it in order to see how the operating system works.

Is it possible to upload Linux to a CD and download it that way? If so, can someone tell me how?

A. Download an ISO image distribution and install it on a CD. Many distributions come with a live CD package that allows you to run the Linux OS from the CD drive without messing with your Windows installation. You might want to try an older version of Linux if the notebook is not up to speed. SimplyMEPIS (MEPIS.org) is a good combination of software that includes apps OpenOffice and stuff. I would download one of the older distributions like 7.0 or 6.5 for an older PC.

Can I download Linux on My PS3 with an external hard drive?
Q. I want to download linux but i hear you need a flash drive and have to partition your internal drive. All i have is a 500gig external drive and 40gig internal. Can I make it work? I really dont want to spend more money on a flash drive if this can be done.

A. You can only run Linux on the internal hard drive. The PS3 can't boot Linux from an external device.

I'm sure you can save the Linux files onto the external hard drive and install them from there to the internal hard drive. You'll need to create a partition on the internal hard drive. I think its 10-12 GB.

How to download Linux with a blocker on...?
Q. I have a built-in internet explorer blocker on, and i want to download Linux. (Don't ask) Bable fish doesn't solve the problem. Is there a way someone can post a link or something so that I don't have to go to the website? Thanks! (Any kind of linux will work. I am just a normal person, with normal needs. I will provide more information if you need more information. I don't exactly know that much about linux.)

A. 1. You could ask someone to download and burn it to a cd for your.

2. You could go to the website below and request a disk be mailed to you. Some are free and some have a fee.
Good luck

Q. I want to download linux for mac and I need a link and I want to know how to do it. Thanks in advance.

A. Download the ISO file, use Apple's Disk Utility to burn it to a start-up DVD.
http://fedoraproject.org/en/get-fedora-ppc (for Mac's with a PowerPC processor i.e. G3, G4, G5).

Is there a way to download linux without a disk drive?
Q. I got this new laptop (ultra portable) without a disk drive. I remember hearing ti was possible to get linux running with a flash drive but, what I want to know is if it's possible to download linux with it (dual boot). If not is there any other way? I'm using an Ubuntu like distro.

A. You have at least 2 options: use unetbootin (see link below) and use an usb drive. or use wubi to download ubuntu to your computer and install from there.
You should also check out the ubuntu remix for the netbook, )see the 3rd link.
Good luck

how do i download linux to a blank computer?
Q. i have a computer with no operating system on it. It's pretty useless right now so i want to put linux on it since its free. All the sites aren't helping.

I just need to know where i can download linux to a disk and pop it into my blank computer and have it start installing on to it.

A. ok, well to me it seems liek you know nothing about linux. except its free and lots of people say "go with linux its great"

it is great, but only if you know how to use it. it seems you just want a free operating system. Because you want just a new operating system to run i would recommend Linspire, it is what used to be known as "Lindows" although linspire costs something, they do have a free version called "Freespire" it is VERY easy to use it was my first linux distro ( now i am into slackware [Wolvix])

most people will says screw that! learn how to use linux, you can.... but you probably wont, you will probably get bored of it because you just dont know how to use it.

ubuntu is great, mepis is great red hat is great, their are plenty of great ones out there... but its kinda a "to each his own" typa thing if you want a free operating system that is easy to use and you dont have to learn commands just to install a program i would go with Freespire, it is a lot like windows, just faster, safer, and ..not windows.

it has all kinds of free software and windows emulators built it, it is easy to find new software with "click and run" service.

Heres where you can download that: http://www.freespire.org/

also if you do want to learn how to use linux but still be able to use the computer you can do that with this distro as well its still linux

How to download the Linux or FreeBSD down to the CD burner?
Q. Because downloaded Linux and FreeBSD are compressed image file, then with FreeBSD downloaded files Disc1, Disc2, Disc3, so I do not know how to do before they can be burned into the CD, I can tell how Office?

A. ImgBurn is a lightweight CD / DVD / HD DVD / Blu-ray burning application that everyone should have in their toolkit!

It has several 'Modes', each one for performing a different task:

Q. ive been wanting to download linux but i heard it will most likely mess up my hard drive and ill need to set up a back up to restore it but i have no way to at the moment. is it safe to download?

A. Installing Ubuntu as a dual-boot with Windows without partitioning
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Wubi

You keep Windows as it is, Wubi only adds an extra option to boot into Ubuntu. Wubi does not require you to modify the partitions of your PC, or to use a different bootloader, and does not install special drivers. It works just like any other application.

Wubi keeps most of the files in one folder, and if you do not like it, you can simply uninstall it as any other application.

Boot in to windows insert the Ubuntu 10.04 LiveCD and you will offered the option of installing inside windows which is where the Wubi installer comes in, you will be asked how many gigabytes you wish to allocate to Ubuntu (I recommend 8gb) then you set a password for your installation then click install and thats it.

Once Ubuntu is fully installed upon starting your PC you will be given a choice of which operating system you want to use Windows or Ubuntu

ubuntu is great, mepis is great red hat is great, their are plenty of great ones out there... but its kinda a "to each his own" typa thing if you want a free operating system that is easy to use and you dont have to learn commands just to install a program i would go with Freespire, it is a lot like windows, just faster, safer, and ..not windows.

it has all kinds of free software and windows emulators built it, it is easy to find new software with "click and run" service.

Heres where you can download that: http://www.freespire.org/

also if you do want to learn how to use linux but still be able to use the computer you can do that with this distro as well its still linux

Good luck

Where is the offical site to download linux?
Q. How do I know which is the best place to download Linux? How do I know that the site I download form is a offical site of Linux?

A. There is no "official" linux.

There are many different distributions or 'flavors' of linux. some are easier to learn than others. some are on CD some on 2 or more.

When I was interested in Linux I went to www.linuxiso.org

That site has downloads for 15 or 20 distributions of linux and links you to the official download site for that particular distro. I would recommend going there first.

Before you download and install any distribution make sure that all your hardware and software is compatible and download ALL the necessary drivers before you make the big switch to linux or you will be in a world of hurt trying to find these drivers after the face, especially if the driver you are looking for is for your video, keyboard, or internet.

Linux can be good to learn and has advantages over windows XP and possibly over Vista as well such as security, lack of viruses, and stability.

Q. i have a computer with no operating system on it. It's pretty useless right now so i want to put linux on it since its free. All the sites aren't helping.

I just need to know where i can download linux to a disk and pop it into my blank computer and have it start installing on to it.

Is it possible to download LINUX on a Windows machine?
Q. I am wondering that downloading LINUX on the Windows machine will cause any problem with my computer and applications that run on Windows or not.

A. YAY! Another one converted!

This has always been a troublesome thing. I'm not going to lie to you. If this is done incorrectly, you can completly delete all windows data and everything that is sacred to you.

I DO NOT want you to try this until someone with more exprience than I comes and checks this for accuracy.

That being said, lets begin.

Your first and very important choice, what version of Linux do you want? For a beginner such as yourself, I suggest a version with a self installer: Xandros or Red Hat Fedora.

Once you visit one of their sites and download their package, burn it onto a DVD or a few CDs.

Before you use this, you need to set aside extra room on your hard drive for Linux. You can do this by getting Ranish Partition Manager at: http://www.ranish.com/part/ and take some space (at least 8 GB) out of your Windows partition. Leave this data in unformated space (no partiton format)

Put this disk into the correct drive, and proceed to make your partitions. The self-installers should be able to select the extra space you made before and utilize it to make Linux.

A new boot loader will be installed and you can select either Linux or Windows (sometimes labled as DOS).

You can change the default Operating System the Boot Loader boots into, but be careful. Run your system in Linux. When you have booted up, open the following file: /etc/grub.conf
When you open this file there will be a text editor which will have one line that reads:
default=0
Depending on what your bootloader recognized Windows as on the list change the 0 to an number 0-4.

e.x. (This is the boot manager)
0.Linux
1.Tools
2.Expert
3.Windows (or DOS)

In that list you would want to select 3. So, change the default to:
default=3

What is the process of download in linux?
Q. I want to download Linux (Fedora or Debian). I downloaded Fedora and its currently in an .iso file. What do I do know? I'm completley new at this. And I need a list of what software to use and I want to spend $0.00. And I'll need a list of supplies that are needed. Most detailed gets best answer.

A. once you have the .iso file you simply burn it to a cd or dvd , you can do this with nero , select burn a disk image stick the cd in and your ready to go . ;-) ,. if your new to Linux i suggest using a Ubuntu , it's based of the debain you downloaded before but it is much more user friendly and allows you to get software quite easily with a graphic interface. And best of all you don't even need to download it with their ship it service they can mail you a copy absolutely free. Ubuntu can be found at http://www.ubuntu.com/
