How do you purchase Windows Server Licenses?

Q. I wish to purchase a VPS server and I wish to use Windows Server on it. I will probably buy 3-4 VPS for different projects. The servers will be with no OS. How do I obtain a license for the windows server and how much is it?

Thank you!

A. on a vps why would you want to buy windows ?

windows server is only valid for that one virtual machine and as you can see by the price here

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2008/en/us/pricing.aspx

is it really worth it ?

i suggest you use an enterprise linux or server linux,
centos and fedora are both free

What Linux distro should I use to set up a home server?
Q. Does anyone have any knowledge on a distribution to use to set up a home server where multiple user accounts are stored and files are stored?

A. I use Fedora 8 64 bit edition. 347 days of up time so far. Can't say that for any Mac or Windows system. I like Kubuntu for a desktop more. Mostly because of the eye candy.

Which operating system is best for server and security centos or redhat or any other os available?
Q. We need a highly secured operating system. So which one is best redhat or fedora or centos?
And also which is bug free?

A. Probably RedHat (who also provided most of the money for the development of Fedora). Security is down to the system admins - if they aren't very good then neither will be your security. Bugs happen, nothing much you can do about them except know how to either fix them or get around them.

How to share folders between fedora and vista?

Q. Using SAMBA server, but when Vista tries to access folders, it does not work. Help?

A. I'm assuming you are talking between two different computers!

make sure you create a user with the same name of the person you are logged into the vista machine as, and make sure you set the password to the same password as the vista user (smbpasswd)

You can also edit the smb.conf file where you created the share to make the share public to anyone without a password (not secure, obviously) to get a starting point.

How to monitor a unix server from Windows?
Q. Hi there

I want to know if there is FREE software for windows XP / Vista that I can download to monitor my remote Red Hat (Unix) server. I need to be notified of high CPU load ect.

I don't want to load anything onto the remote server...

A. Download? Download? Netstat, like telnet has been part of Windoze (NT) for ages and ages:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Netstat

By the way, is this RHEL, CentOS or Fedora? If it is the first you have a consulting contract which should enable you to call and get the answer for the best one by phone. Some of my friends work for Red Hat and even when it's not their job they are happy to help you. If your contract has expired I suggest switching to CentOS which is community supported.

How to tell the difference between pc and xbox/wii/ps3 servers?
Q. so I want to host a server for a game called frontlines fuel of war from a hosting site, right? but how can I be sure its not a host for the pc game(I want the server to be for the xbox edition). If I make a server it will be for the xbox edition. please help. Oh yea for the record this game is not hosted by xbox live and it was made by thq. now that thq is gone players have to host their own servers from there xbox or buy them online. please tell me how to buy 1 online and make sure its not the pc editioon server
p.s sorry for the roundbout detials but serously how

A. Well, not knowing about the game and install of it, or it's relation to xbox, I think your question comes down to wanting a server.
You are going to find that two flavors of servers are provided. Windows based servers, and Linux (centos, Fedora, Linux of various kinds) servers.
You probably will need a windows based server for what you are describing.
Most likely a virtual private server or dedicated server. Won't be cheap, but I will provide you a link below that should help with cost, and they can also answer more questions for you via chat.

However, if you have not setup a server before, then you are going to get involved in something that is a lot lot lot more than you may expect.

Q. i have a fedora 2.0 server and i want to connect it from my windows xp. i can connect to another linux firewall on same network but i cant accces the fedora 2.0 server why? i use puTTY 0.60. plz help

1) An SSH server might not be running.

2) The server might only accept SSH1 connections and you might be attempting an SSH2 server with puTTY.

What is the easiest way to setup your own Linux / Unix Web Server?
Q. Want to learn Unix as much as possible, I figured setting up a web server would be the easiest project to start off with. Can someone reccomend an easy way to go about doing this for a newbie?

A. download and burn .iso images for either ubuntu or fedora. if you're a beginner, don't use ubuntu server edition because it is all command line and there is no graphical window interface. then you want to install and run a web server after you get the linux OS installed, such as apache. i've discovered that help and tutorials are easy to find once you know what the applications' names are, such as
apache=web server
mysql=database

you should be able to google your answers from there.

By the way, is this RHEL, CentOS or Fedora? If it is the first you have a consulting contract which should enable you to call and get the answer for the best one by phone. Some of my friends work for Red Hat and even when it's not their job they are happy to help you. If your contract has expired I suggest switching to CentOS which is community supported.

How to connect to fedora server 2.0 from win xp using puTTY?
Q. i have a fedora 2.0 server and i want to connect it from my windows xp. i can connect to another linux firewall on same network but i cant accces the fedora 2.0 server why? i use puTTY 0.60. plz help

A. What happens when you try? There are lots of different possibilities, but without knowing what goes wrong, it's hard to say.

1) An SSH server might not be running.

2) The server might only accept SSH1 connections and you might be attempting an SSH2 server with puTTY.

3) The SSH server might be running, but a firewall or TCP connection rule may be disallowing your connection.

How do I setup our proxy server to require a password before users can connect to it to access the internet?
Q. I am using Fedora Core 4 proxy server.

Thanks.

A. I'm assuming Fedora is using Squid as the proxy server. Here's a link to information on authentication and squid.
