I want to make a media server for my home. What is the best open source app? How would I go about doing this?

Q. I was thinking this would be a good way to learn Linux. What would be the best approach for this?

A. Do you just want to store files or do you want to play them on your TV?

File server for streaming media:

How do I set up a central media library for my home?
Q. How do I set up a central media library from which I can access iTunes, DVR hard drive and the Internet from any TV in my house?

Need/Want:
1-Access iTunes from anywhere, wirelessly (all our music in on a separate driveânot NAS though)
2-Access the Internet from any of my TVâs with a mainstream browser
3-Need to have DVR capabilities, ideally centralized and accessible from all TVs
4-Wirelessly project sound to multiple speakers

I have looked into Apple TV and Sonos, but neither fill all these criteria. I am open to multiple devices, or custom configuration of dedicated PCs to do this.

I appreciate your suggestions.

What is the difference between Windows and Linux Servers?
Q. In not too technical terms - what is the difference between thse two? If I were to use .net nuke , is there a perference over which server I should use?

A. Wow! This is a question that pops up all over the web, and one that I had myself as a web services person. You can read a lot about the differences - as well as the advantages of one over the other. In the sources area, I've listed several such discussions and articles, including the last item which is a lengthy discussion in a Wikipedia article on the subject. In terms of finding something non-technical, I would recommend the first site.

The article from AskWebHosting.com states the following about using .net: "If you intend to create your site using ASP, FrontPage, the .NET environment, Windows Streaming Media, Access, MSSQL, or any of the other Microsoft proprietary technologies then you probably need to use a Windows host. There is limited support for a number of these technologies in Linux, but they can be expensive and are usually lacking in features."

But you're talking about using DotNetNuke, which is an open source answer to .NET. As such, it may not matter at all, from that standpoint, which option you choose.

I hope that these sources are helpful!

How To Make A Simple Home Media Server?

Q. Hi guys, I am wondering how I can make a simple home media server running from an old server computer I have. Does anyone know of anyone linux distros that will let me stream videos from that computer to a windows or mac comuter? Or can I just open a video from the windows or mac machine from the server??? Could anyone help me achieve this please? All I want is to be able to use my server computer to keep videos and music and then watch them from another part of my house...
Thanks,
waco001

A. Any distro will work (light weight would be better - Ubuntu Server CLI). Just install Samba for file sharing, openssh so you can have a headless server, and a program to stream/transcode your music/movies. There are many, but I use PS3 Media Server. Written in jave, runs on Windows, GNU/Linux, and Mac. I had many problems with Media Tomb and others. PS3 Media Server worked the easiest.

If you can connect a computer to your TV, you can use XBMC. With it there is no need for the server to transcode the media. If your computer is too old or slow you may have problems with the transcoding/streaming of video.

Can a file and media server be created in a Linux system?
Q. I'm using Ubuntu 6.06 and I wish to create a file and media server on it. I've used Samba for the file server part.

What about for the media part? Can it be done?

Can it be in the same desktop or does it has to be on two?

Which media server software is the most compatible with an Ubuntu file server?

A. There are inbuilt facilities for most of your requirements, the apache web server is a good basis for adding your media server. Look through the Linux forums, this is not my field, you will definitely find what you want.

What's the cheapest intel processor/motherboard you would suggest for a linux MMC?
Q. I am planning the parts I need to build a media server to store my music and movies. I am budgeting right now, and would prefer to spend as much money as I can on storage space and a high end video card and audio card. Am I wrong in assuming this doesn't need the high end 8 core whatever most expensive processor out there?

Unless someone has a compelling reason to go with AMD, I am looking at intels.

A. Go to pricewatch.com they have mainboard/CPU combos take your pick.

What is the common place to mount a network drive in linux.?
Q. I have a Ubuntu server that I hope to use to share files to my roommates using Samba. I know I can mount the drive anywhere and then share it but is there a common place that it shold be mounted?

A. With Ubuntu most drives (other than the obvious /, /boot, /home, etc.) are mounted under /media, but it really doesn't matter.

Playstation 3 as a Media Center Extender, how can it read my networked external hard drive?
Q. I use my PS3 as a media extender. However it only reads the pictures, music and movies in my documents in Vista Home Premium. I have a Network attached storage unit with Gigs of music, movies and pictures. How can I get my PS3 to read those files without having them stored locally on my computer. Or even if there is a unit that can do that. Thank you in advanced.

A. There are a couple of things you can do:
* Set up a UPnP (universal plug and play) server on your computer that will be detected by your PS3 (this is what I do)
* Move all those files to a USB Drive then plug that into your PS3 (this will remove the files from your computer but not take up all the space on your PS3, plus you can get cheap USB drives with lots of space (300GB+) now days)
* Look into getting a file server for both your PS3 and Computer. A small Linux box would work best for this and they have models on ThinkGeek.com

Can I use small desktop computer as home server?
Q. I am planning to buy small computer such as Dell OptiPlex 755 USFF, SFF, or DT desktop. I want to use small desktop as server. I want to install Windows Server 2008 OS for network storage, media sharing, and print server at home. I don't know if the Dell OptiPlex 755 can to run as server. Thanks!

A. Why not buy a NAS?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822155020

Pop up to two hard drives into it (sold separately), and it hooks up to the router. You get storage accessible by any networked device in your home, plus printer sharing. There's also the option to use Raid 5, and server quality drives like WD Red.

Lots of different choices for a NAS solution, that's just a cheap one (and the one I have personally).

But yes, you could use a small computer as a server as well. A NAS is just a simpler solution that takes up MUCH less room.

--------

EDIT - Just a quick note. I run a program called Serviio (free) on my desktop and it acts as a go-between (you just choose the NAS drive when setting up Serviio). While I could get things directly off the NAS, Serviio will transcode any file that is unsupported on the fly for me as well as rename/reorganise my files using metadata off the net. Besides, my desktop never gets shut off and I like not having deal with episode names.

If you go with an actual computer, look into using a linux-based XBMC distro. Really easy to setup, great interface and will host all your media files.

What is my best option for a home media server?

Q. CURRENT SETUP:
I currently own 1 WD Media Hub and 2 WD Media Players. Each of these has 2 USB ports, so I have 6 hard drives hooked up. I use network adapters through electrical sockets to access all the drives from any of the players.

ISSUES With Current Setup:
1) The two media players need to be turned "on" in order to access their drives (the Hub can be in the "on" or "off" state). (I worry that the hard drives and/or media players are being worked too hard since I don't believe the players were designed to be on 24/7)

2) Navigation is not great because the media is spread across multiple locations.

3) My current setup can not accommodate expansion, and I would like to expand to 8 to 10 Hard Drives (each 3+ TBs in size).

SOLUTION?!?

This is where I need your help. What is the best solution to accommodate my needs. Is there a home media server device that allows you to hook up 8-10+ Hard Drives? Should I purchase/setup a dedicated PC to handle this? If so, should I go with Windows 7 or Windows 8 (would rather not mess with unix/linux). Would this device be able to handle the load of media being accessed by 3 different users/devices/rooms at one time?

A. Very good question and well explained.

Well you can certainly build a custom media server and is probably the most cost effect way to have a media server. The only real issue is having a nice interface or gui so you can easily access the software. It has to be efficient and easy to use otherwise it defeats the purpose.

I will include some links to building your own media server, and of course the better and more expensive options if you have the budget. Sure you can also you your PC as a hub with external hard drivers in a RAID configuration and use Windows media so you have a nice interface to access your movies. The PS 3 can also be used, its not a good interface but it does work if you want to use that. Don't know about windows 8 so couldn't tell you how well that would work sorry. As far as streaming to other rooms from a custom home built server that I don't have knowledge in.

Kaleidscape is the hot media server, has a great interface and gui, works great as Ive installed many, easily upgradable, can be made to work and access from any room in the house etc. "But" its not cheap lol. Gives you an idea how a media server should be designed.

What is a good free dnla media server for windows 7, similar to playon?
Q. I am trying to use a media server that is similar to playon, but free. I bought a sony bdps570, it is dnla enabled, I'm trying to use tversity, which I do like, and found out it is not dlna. I would really like to have it hulu compatible (free, not hulu plus) and play from my library (my harddrive). If you use a particular one, please tell me why you like it. Thanks for your input.

A. Try this link, it has a list of programs

I want to make a media server for my home. What is the best open source app? How would I go about doing this?
Q. I was thinking this would be a good way to learn Linux. What would be the best approach for this?

A. Do you just want to store files or do you want to play them on your TV?

What about for the media part? Can it be done?

Can it be in the same desktop or does it has to be on two?

Which media server software is the most compatible with an Ubuntu file server?
