is it possible to install windows 7 on a linux netbook that does not have any version of windows installed?

Q. i have an asus Eee linux netbook 900 that does not have any version of windows installed. i wish to buy windows 7 home premium to install ... what else, besides home premium, will i need, or is preferable to install something like windows vista, for example?

A. With some savvy installation, it is even possible to run both Linux and WIndows 7 on one PC. Not at the same time of course. You will need to download and install a "Boot Manager" if you don;t know how to configure your PC to "dual boot". Dual boot just means that when you first start your PC. it will ask you which system you want to launch. Skip Vista and head for WIndows 7 if you are intent on avoiding XP, as Vista is a "hog" and "slug". My recommendation is for XP.

How easy is it to shift work between Linux and Windows computers?
Q. I am thinking of buying a cheap netbook ( the ASUS Eee PC 4G 701). Will I be able to write a document on the linux netbook and transfer it to Microsoft Word on my home computer, and is this difficult?

If you have any additional knowledge/experience of this netbook, it would be greatly appreciated.

A. If you are going to buy a Linux netbook I recommend buying one of the ones with Ubuntu Linux, such as dells or hp's. The Linux shipped on the eeepc is quite unpopular, and does not represent what Linux is capable of. (although you can reinstall another distribution on it)

The fact is that Linux is Linux and adding wine or any other program works basically the same regardless of the version.
You can visit the Linpus website http://www.linpus.com/
You can also check the manuals http://www.linpus.com/help.php
Changing to Ubuntu is ok, but I simply don't see the advantage.

Linux is not difficult, just different than what you may be used to using.
You should be able to directly download and install most items from the notebook itself off any web connection.
Here is step by step how to install wine or just about any other app!

A. Format the stick (right click, Format); that will delete every file and the non-working formating, and/or any corruption or bug.

are there any games that are easy to download and install to my linux netbook?
Q. i'm having a great deal of trouble trying to install any games to my asus linux netbook 900. i don't have windows and find it impossibly difficult and complicated to understand the installation procedure.

are there any sites that allow games to be downloaded/installed and played offline by simply opening and/or extracting the files. without having to also downloads endless programs or updates in order to just play the game?

please avoid using techno-speak when answering.

thank you

A. If you go to your main menu and look for an entry that says Add and Remove programs, you should use that to install games, or any other software that you want. It will automatically download what is needed, install it, and put an entry in you menu.

My computer can't connect to my wireless router wirelessly but it can with a wired connection?

Q. I just bought and set up a D-Link DGL-4500, and it works perfectly if my computer is plugged in to the ports at the back of the router, but when I try to connect wirelessly it just says "Windows cannot connect".

When I try to connect my cheap little linux netbook wirelessly, it connects flawlessly.

What can I do to make this work??

A. I bet it's because you need to install all of the service packs on your Windows machine.

I believe that support for WPA/WPA2 wasn't included until either SP2 or SP3 of XP.

If that's not the problem, then go to the web site of your computer manufacturer or WiFi card manufacturer to see if there is an updated driver or support program available for your computer or WifI card.

Download the WiFi related updates (if available) and see if that doesn't fix the issue.

Good Luck!

are there any games that are easy to download and install to my linux netbook?

Q. i'm having a great deal of trouble trying to install any games to my asus linux netbook 900. i don't have windows and find it impossibly difficult and complicated to understand the installation procedure.

are there any sites that allow games to be downloaded/installed and played offline by simply opening and/or extracting the files. without having to also downloads endless programs or updates in order to just play the game?

please avoid using techno-speak when answering.

thank you

A. If you go to your main menu and look for an entry that says Add and Remove programs, you should use that to install games, or any other software that you want. It will automatically download what is needed, install it, and put an entry in you menu.
Good luck

The fact is that Linux is Linux and adding wine or any other program works basically the same regardless of the version.
You can visit the Linpus website http://www.linpus.com/
You can also check the manuals http://www.linpus.com/help.php
Changing to Ubuntu is ok, but I simply don't see the advantage.

Linux is not difficult, just different than what you may be used to using.
You should be able to directly download and install most items from the notebook itself off any web connection.
Here is step by step how to install wine or just about any other app!

How do i delete the files from my memory stick?
Q. I have a linux netbook and i have a verbatim 2gb memory stick. I cannot add or delete any files onto the stick. i press delete on the keyboard but it does nothing... i cant right click the file and click delete as it is not highlighted/enabled . help?
thank you

A. Format the stick (right click, Format); that will delete every file and the non-working formating, and/or any corruption or bug.

Good Luck!

how to uninstall programs on linux? and how to download skype?

Q. i just got a new linux netbook. i tried to download skype and i could not. so i want to know how to download it, i tried everything.

also, i downloaded it like 10 times and i want to save disk space, so how do i uninstall all the skype programs?

A. How you install something depends on how you installed it. If you installed it via source, then go into the file where you compiled it and type sudo make uninstall. If you installed it with a package manager then you'll need to use the package manager to uninstall it.

If you want to install skype, then you have two options. Since skype is not open source, you can't compile the source for it. You can use your package manager to install whatever version they provide though the repos, or you can go to http://www.skype.com/intl/en-us/get-skype/on-your-computer/linux/ and download an updated version for whatever linux distro you are using.

Thanks!

A. If you are going to buy a Linux netbook I recommend buying one of the ones with Ubuntu Linux, such as dells or hp's. The Linux shipped on the eeepc is quite unpopular, and does not represent what Linux is capable of. (although you can reinstall another distribution on it)

HP Mini 110 Mi $279
http://dwarfurl.com/9461b

Dell Mini 10v $299
http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?oc=dncwfa2&c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19

Linux has many of the same programs you may be use to: Firefox, OpenOffice.org, pidgin, which interoperate well.

Once you get use to Linux you wont want to go back :P

I have a netbook with a CPU power of 600MHZ and I as whether it can run a PSP or PS2 emulator.

A. I would try it, & if it doesnt work it doesnt work, but I wouldn't expect anything FUN from a 600MHZ computer.

Mount network drive on Linpus Linux Netbook?

Q. Is there easy way (for a complete linux newbie) to mount network drive on linpus linux netbook? I don't even know how to enter the commands on linpus linux although I have lots of experience on WIndows systems. TIA for your help.

A. Linux can read and write to most file formats. There are several ways to do this
The below assumes you have set up network security properly and have access rights to the drive

From the command line:

use the mount command

mount -t (type) device) (dir)
where type is the type of device the drive is
device is what the device is
dir is what the root director is

hint enter man mount at the command line to see the manual pages for the mount command for a fuller explanation and for correct syntax

On a GUI

Use the GUI to navigate the network to the drive you want to access
right mouse on the drive
mount the drive

Wish I could be more help, but I'm not sure what distro you are running

Good Luck and Welcome to Linux

What is linux netbook operating system?
Q. I know that it is an operating system, but what does that even mean? I have windows vista now, and heard that linux is better, but I'm not even sure what it is supposed to be better at!

Can it go on any type of computer?

Also, what is the cost?

A. Linux is an alternate operating system similar in many ways to Unix. It was invented by Linus Torvalds. The core of the operating system is available for free. There are many companies that distribute linux with various different bundles of software. I prefer OpenSuse however Ubuntu or Kubuntu is often considered easier for the average end user.

http://www.opensuse.org
http://www.ubuntu.com/
http://www.kubuntu.org/

Why is it better?

More secure
more stable
faster
free

Did i mention it was free?

Not all hardware out there has drivers for Linux so no; it won't run <any> computer but You can run linux on more different computers than MS Vista. There are linux versions that will run with very old hardware and it can run on very modern systems so you have a lot more flexibility. I have a customer that is using 3000 old 486 machines from their surplus now because Linux is so much faster and more efficient and can work on those older systems and make a functional machine out of what would otherwise be junk and my machine here is running a quad athlon with Nvidia 9900 graphics on quad monitors and 32GB of Ram with OpenSuse 11.1. Life is good :D

How do you download stuff onto a Linux eee netbook? 10 points!?
Q. It is an Asus eee Linux 900 netbook, and I can't figure out how to download stuff onto it. I want to get the flash player, and stuff like that, but it just says where do you want to put it on your computer, and I pick a place, and it doesn't work. Please help!
Thanks,
Ferretowner96

A. The Asus eee Linux 900 netbook runs Xandros Linux, running KDE desktop and IceWM.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asus_Eee_PC

I think you have to enable the "Desktop mode" then you get complete control of the KDE desktop, it's likely in a "netbook" mode as default. Like Ubuntu Netbook edition is, so read the manual how to enable desktop mode.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KDE

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IceWM

Also you want to search around for the Synaptic Package Manager, search and enable the Adobe Flash and then install it. They do it this way so you can enable multiple installs.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synaptic_Package_Manager

Later you might want to install Macbuntu and make your eeePC look like you installed a bootleg copy of OS X.

http://www.dedoimedo.com/computers/macbuntu.html

(note: you will have to do a total install of the Macbuntu ISO via USB key using Windows and LinuxLive USB Creator, as it uses Ubuntu and Gnome desktop, any and all files have to be removed first)

How to create and boot windows or linux on my 1gb usb?
Q. How to create and boot windows or linux on netbook using USB flash drive?

A. unetbootin

Is it possible to put Windows XP or Vista onto a Linux netbook?
Q. Is it possible? I don't really want Linux, as I'm much more familiar with windows. How much would it cost?

A. first, look at the specs. if the HHD or SSD is small, you might be able to pull it off, but consider an external SSD or a high-capacity flash drive. Also, does it have an optical drive? if not, you would need an external one and it has to have some form of BIOS. (the thingy that loads before the OS). If the netbook meets all these, it might give you the option to boot from other sources. Press it and boot from the windows installation CD. Choose the highest capacity device that you can install it on. (With a netbook, you could probably do XP, but vista NO WAY!!!) Good luck! =D
