Can I switch between Windows 7 and Linux (Ubuntu) whenever I want without deleting any files?

Q. Steam has just come out on Linux today, and on the Steam page, if I read it correctly, I can store Ubuntu on a USB drive and boot up Linux from it. When I don't want to use Linux anymore, I can go back to Windows without any files missing. Is this true? I want to try out Linux to see if I like it for non-gaming purposes, but I'm worried that it will possibly delete files on my computer if I do it incorrectly. Thanks!

A. With Linux, you have 2 options:
1. Run it off the flash drive or CD without installing it.
2. Install it on a different partition so you'll have 2 OS in your computer which you can run one at a time.

If you only boot from the flash drive or CD that contains Linux and run it then you don't lose your Windows and files provided you don't install it on the partition where your Windows and data are located.

How do i find out how much memory my graphic card has ubuntu?
Q. ok im using play on linux and when i am installing steam it asked how much memory my graphic card has and i dont know how to find out help?

A. if it's discrete you should be able to look up the model number to find out.

For integrated, you need to dig in the bios and see how much RAM was set aside for video buffers.

Can i play my windows steam games on linux?
Q. Hi I am very intrested in linux, but know almost nothing about it:) Can I install it for my gaming pc and play all of my steam games i have on it? thanks

A. No, steam games do not currently work on Linux. Valve is, however, working on games for Linux. Their first title for steam will be Left 4 Dead 2.

How can i Install steam on ubuntu os and make it work?

Q. I am hoping someone will be able to give instructions that are easily understood, any time i go to a web page with instructions to install steam on ubuntu i find terms that i dont really understand and cant figure out how to install it.

What are the benifets of linux, what are its major differences from windowsXP?

Q. also i am planning on running a hl2 steam server (counter-strike source) any tips for that?

A. Main difference being that Linux is open source and therefore you can do anything you want with it.
I think stability and security are the main practical differences.

A. First, get a distro that is more stable than Ubuntu. I play TF2 and most other steam games on Slackware, and they all work great.

Having said that, though, most of the time your problem is either the wine version you are using, or the video drivers. Wine is at 1.5.20, and I'm finding it to be a very stable release. Check your video drivers, see if there is something more current. The current AMD drivers are for the most part stable, not sure about the current nVidia drivers.

If you know how, create a new wine prefix, and try playing TF2 in that.

Will all my games work with ubuntu linux?
Q. The other day I was hanging out with my friends, and they told me about Linux how it was just like Windows. I did look it up it looks nice, but there is one thing. I am a huge PC gamer, my only question is, will all my games on my Steam library work with Linux?

A. No. None of your games in your library will work. You might be able to get them running using Wine, but it's not worth the trouble and they'd probably run real slow anyway. You would need to repurchase them somewhere else, since steam does not offer Linux versions of games. If you want to game, stick with your PC.
Linux is not "just like Windows". Not many people use it so it doesn't have good game support. I use it because it's lighter and good for basic tasks. Not games.

How do i use a graphical file manager so i can use steam on "Linux"?

Q. So i wan to use steam on my school macbook that i can bring home. But to use programs like steam i have to use linux (works for minecraft). The only way I can use steam on linux is to open it with a graphical file manager (i downloaded muCommander). I don't know how to use one because i don't use linux. I'd love some help.

A. I'm not sure what you are trying to accomplish.

Steam can be installed to Windows or Mac.

File managers can be used for any operating system if one is written for it.

If you are using it on a Linux machine, it seems that they have it in limited beta. You may not be able to participate in this beta version.

Anyone else having Steam for Linux overheating problems on laptops?
Q. Well I got most of my games from Humble Indie Bundle and they worked absolutely fine on my Dell laptop. No overheating or anything. I then get Steam for Linux and I play some games that I KNOW runs perfectly fine on the laptop such as Amnesia. Now when I play games through Steam my laptop overheats after a few minutes playing. Any reason why?

Is anyone here excited for the upcoming Steam linux client?
Q. I sure am. I'll just start buying games for linux to support the platform. Rarely will I boot into windows anymore. Except to play Killing Floor or Battlefield 3. Hopefully AMD will release better linux drivers by the time it's out since I'm not a big Nvidia fan.

A. I am. I think that Steam for Linux will change a lot by fixing one of the few shortcomings of Linux and helping Windows users keep our precious games.

do you need windows OS to run windows OS apps on linux using wine?

A. no, wine provides the function calls itself, there is no need for a windows installation disk or license.

How do I run Steam games on Linux?

Q. I got Steam to work on Linux using Wine. All my games worked just fine for a while, but all of the sudden none of them will run (except Portal for some reason). When i try to open them it says, "Preparing to launch," then does nothing. Does anyone know what the problem is, or how to fix it?

A. You could use a program like WINE (Windows Emulator) to get it going. Or you can try a virtual machine but sometimes that wont load drivers and you still wont be able to play. The best option will be a dual boot of windows and linux. The reason being, that for the sake of stability, for the drivers to work, and for you to get a good performance it is just easier to play on Windows (since all PC games are generally designed for Windows environments).

How can i play COD MW2 on Linux Ubuntu?
Q. So i bought MW2 and installed steam on linux and then installed the game... after it finished, i launch the game and it opens but with a dark screen and the words seem to be corrupted , like they do not appear and i cant do anything with it... how can i play MW2 on my computer, although i have Wine and the game opens through it already,,, what should i do?

Most of the games on Steam say that they require one of the three distros Ubuntu, Fedora, and Mint.
Some other games say they only require one (usually Ubuntu) which sort of makes me think that means thats the only one that it will work on. So if it list just one of the distro does that really mean it can't at all run on any other Distro?
By the way the Linux game I'm looking at is Serious Sam 3, which is one of those games that say they only require ubuntu.

A. It depends on how it's packaged.

A game developer that just releases a .deb with Ubuntu in mind just hung Fedora and SUSE users out to dry because they use .rpm packages. Of course if the source code is available one could always compile the game manually, but that doesn't mean that every "Linux program" works on every distribution by default, as they obviously don't.

Steam for Linux is still in Beta, so things are still up in air, as you've noticed with the varying system requirements; it often seems that Valve is really targetting the Ubuntu and Ubuntu-derivative segment because it thinks that's where the biggest user-base is, but I'm sure Fedora and the other rpm distros won't be completely ignored.

Does every game on linux work on every distro?

Q. I wanted to try out Linux. I wanted to either get Fedora or Ubuntu (Mostly Fedora). So I'm a PC gamer, and I wanted to try out the Steam on Linux so my question is:
Most of the games on Steam say that they require one of the three distros Ubuntu, Fedora, and Mint.

The reason being, that for the sake of stability, for the drivers to work, and for you to get a good performance it is just easier to play on Windows (since all PC games are generally designed for Windows environments).

How do i use a graphical file manager so i can use steam on "Linux"?

Q. So i wan to use steam on my school macbook that i can bring home. But to use programs like steam i have to use linux (works for minecraft). The only way I can use steam on linux is to open it with a graphical file manager (i downloaded muCommander). I don't know how to use one because i don't use linux. I'd love some help.

A. I'm not sure what you are trying to accomplish.

Steam can be installed to Windows or Mac.

File managers can be used for any operating system if one is written for it.

If you are using it on a Linux machine, it seems that they have it in limited beta. You may not be able to participate in this beta version.

How can i play COD MW2 on Linux Ubuntu?

Q. So i bought MW2 and installed steam on linux and then installed the game... after it finished, i launch the game and it opens but with a dark screen and the words seem to be corrupted , like they do not appear and i cant do anything with it... how can i play MW2 on my computer, although i have Wine and the game opens through it already,,, what should i do?

Does every game on linux work on every distro?

Q. I wanted to try out Linux. I wanted to either get Fedora or Ubuntu (Mostly Fedora). So I'm a PC gamer, and I wanted to try out the Steam on Linux so my question is:
Most of the games on Steam say that they require one of the three distros Ubuntu, Fedora, and Mint.
Some other games say they only require one (usually Ubuntu) which sort of makes me think that means thats the only one that it will work on. So if it list just one of the distro does that really mean it can't at all run on any other Distro?

Will all my games work with ubuntu linux?

Q. The other day I was hanging out with my friends, and they told me about Linux how it was just like Windows. I did look it up it looks nice, but there is one thing. I am a huge PC gamer, my only question is, will all my games on my Steam library work with Linux?

A. No. None of your games in your library will work. You might be able to get them running using Wine, but it's not worth the trouble and they'd probably run real slow anyway. You would need to repurchase them somewhere else, since steam does not offer Linux versions of games. If you want to game, stick with your PC.
Linux is not "just like Windows". Not many people use it so it doesn't have good game support. I use it because it's lighter and good for basic tasks. Not games.

How can I live stream an event with reliable delivery?
Q. The institution that I work in needs to allow its viewers to view an live event and I guess video streaming is the solution we are looking for. I have exposure to Windows but not much at linux. Is there any reliable way of video streaming using Windows and any tutorials on how to stream a video would be appreciated.

PS: I tried VLC but doesn't look like the solution we are looking for, some thing advance would be appreciated.

A. Yes, infact I believe that Microsoft Windows has one of the best solutions for video streaming. It is called IIS Smooth Streaming and IIS Live Smooth Streaming and as I see you are broadcasting a live event, probably an input from a DV Camera.

If you have a Windows Vista / 7 PC and Microsoft Expression Encoder all you need to do is to download a web player (Silverlight) and doing some tweaks here and there and you will end up with a video streaming solution that is comparable with the industry. Expression Encoder Pro is available free of charge without the H264 codec and could be obtained from their site (doesn't show up easy) other wise its just below 200$ in price and is worth it.

How to get diner dash to play linux?
Q. Have linux on my computer i want to play diner dash... i have tried wine and all that crap currently wine wont open anything so i am very unhappy. i have also tried virtual box i am on linux 10.4 and stupid virtual box will not install windows it gets half way and stops.

A. Try the program PlayOnLinux. if that does not work than I believe you are out of luck. Dont leave Linux though. Because are gaming base with double within the next 3 month. Valve is currently working on steam for linux. This will give us a big library of games.
