Linux Firewalls that can connect to a domain?
Q. Hi all (again)

Anybody know of a linux based firewall that has the ability to connect to an active directory domain controller to authenticate users?

I have a Server 2003 Enterprise x64 Domain controller...

Anybody know of a firewall that can do this

PS: Can't afford Smoothwall!

A. First question, why would a firewall (network device) need to authenticate against AD?
If trying to control users in the Firewall with AD , try maybe Radius. There are a few free versions out there.

PS Smoothwall is "free", as most Linux firewalls. What may not be free is add-ons or support...

How can I protect other machines on my Lan using virtual firewall appliance ?
Q. If I have a Windows machine with a virtual linux based firewall appliance inside of it, I know how to protect the host machine with the firewall. How do I protect the other machines on the LAN using the virtual appliance ? Would I only have to set the "Gateway" setting of the other machines to the address of the virtual machine ?

A. Yes, and set their firewalls to block anything not comming from the appliance.

How can you install windows 7 on a linux os computer?

Q. My brother has a linux os computer and he wants to install windows 7 using my disc. Any help?

A. Assuming his linux computer is i386 based processor computer (PC) then he must choose whether to install in natively, as dual boot, or as a guest operating system, in a virtual machine.

This of course, assuming that he owns the license for the windows 7.

Installing it natively allows you to install 2 operating systems on your PC, but allows you to only use one at any given time. Usually, upon boot, the os loader (grub or OS Loader) would ask which operating system you would like to use.

Installing in a virtual machine, on the other hand, creates a virtual computer within your Linux operating system, like VMWare or Xen. This virtual computer can then be installed the Windows7. You can use both operating system at the same time, and even communicate with the both machines as if they are physically separate computers.

Down side is that, since this is 1 machine running inside another, your guest operating system cannot get the full performance load running your host computer.

Are there any linux os that will run on an old laptop with a Linksys wireless card?
Q. I have a few Linux OS i have tried out and none of them worked with a Linksys wifi card. Can a Linksys wireless card work with Linux or is there another OS that will work with it and work on an old computer?
I am running on a very slow and old laptop Pentium 3 with original windows 98 installed on it.

A. Find what model card you have and see if it is supported, ie google ubuntu + card model. It may simply be a matter of installing the appropriate driver from the repository.

An alternative is to install ndiswrapper, if it isn't already installed, and use the .inf file from the XP drivers for the card, which you can download from the manufacturers website.

If the machine doesn't have at least 256 meg of ram then it won't be capable of web surfing.

The lightest full system to use would be puppy. Xpud is also worth a try, it is basically just a browser and a file manager. The best choice for a polished, configurable system would be lubuntu (ubuntu with the lxde desktop).

Cheers!

What Linux os is the best one to install on a computer?
Q. For people wanting to download media files on? And are all Linux os's free or atleast the good ones? Is there any point of me putting linux on my d drive so I can switch back and fourth from windows 7 to Linux?

A. Most Linux distributions aimed at home/office users are free.
There is no "best". This test will help you decide: http://www.zegeniestudios.net/ldc/
As you are probably a new linux user, I would recommend ubuntu or openSUSE. It can install and configure the GRUB loader for you, which is what you need to dual-boot windows and linux, and yes, you should definitely keep your windows installation.

BTW, All distros are able to download media files, most of them able to play them straight away (I would say all, but then there is Arch and Ubuntu Server ;)).

There's really no reason to think of which distro to choose for too much, most are quite similar. The only major differences between distros are the package managing systems and the pre-installed packages. Anotherdifference is, for example, that in Ubuntu, unlike Debian, you can not su root (=login as superuser) by default. (TTheoreticallyyou can make Debian look and behave exactly like Ubuntu with some configuration work, though.)

Is it possible to download Linux with a CD?

Q. I have an extremely old Windows laptop that can't go on the internet (it's modem doesn't work). I want to download Linux on it in order to see how the operating system works.

Is it possible to upload Linux to a CD and download it that way? If so, can someone tell me how?

A. Download an ISO image distribution and install it on a CD. Many distributions come with a live CD package that allows you to run the Linux OS from the CD drive without messing with your Windows installation. You might want to try an older version of Linux if the notebook is not up to speed. SimplyMEPIS (MEPIS.org) is a good combination of software that includes apps OpenOffice and stuff. I would download one of the older distributions like 7.0 or 6.5 for an older PC.

Can I download Linux on My PS3 with an external hard drive?
Q. I want to download linux but i hear you need a flash drive and have to partition your internal drive. All i have is a 500gig external drive and 40gig internal. Can I make it work? I really dont want to spend more money on a flash drive if this can be done.

A. You can only run Linux on the internal hard drive. The PS3 can't boot Linux from an external device.

I'm sure you can save the Linux files onto the external hard drive and install them from there to the internal hard drive. You'll need to create a partition on the internal hard drive. I think its 10-12 GB.

Where is the offical site to download linux?
Q. How do I know which is the best place to download Linux? How do I know that the site I download form is a offical site of Linux?

A. There is no "official" linux.

There are many different distributions or 'flavors' of linux. some are easier to learn than others. some are on CD some on 2 or more.

When I was interested in Linux I went to www.linuxiso.org

That site has downloads for 15 or 20 distributions of linux and links you to the official download site for that particular distro. I would recommend going there first.

Before you download and install any distribution make sure that all your hardware and software is compatible and download ALL the necessary drivers before you make the big switch to linux or you will be in a world of hurt trying to find these drivers after the face, especially if the driver you are looking for is for your video, keyboard, or internet.

Linux can be good to learn and has advantages over windows XP and possibly over Vista as well such as security, lack of viruses, and stability.

Linux - File system structure between different distros?

Q. I have been reading about Linux distros and I am lost in that kind of "flavors".
Would someone help me understand the main differences in the file system structure in Fedora and how this is compared with the file system structure in Debian?

A. From an end-user perspective there really isn't much difference. Mostly the file system structure (do you mean layout?) is the same. For example, standard programs live in one or more of /bin, /sbin, /usr/bin, /usr/sbin, and custom applications live in /usr/local/bin (but you don't need to worry about any of that, as the PATH variable manages finding them).

Debian-derived distributions provide for some configuration within the directory /etc/default/, and network interfaces are either configured in the file /etc/network/interfaces or by Network Manager.

RedHat-derived distributions (including Fedora) mostly use /etc/sysconfig/ for configuration files, and network interfaces are configured in separate files (one per interfaces) underneath /etc/sysconfig/interfaces/ or by Network Manager

Unless you're getting into writing portable installation scripts that's about as far as you really need to go.

How to Install Red Hat Linux Desktop version 4?
Q. I want to install Red Hat Linux Desktop version 4. Please tell me the step-by-step installation and which file system will be best for this O/S?
Like in windows, we have NTFS file system(which has very security features).
Is there any such file system in Linux?
Which file system should i use?

A. Put the CD in the drive, restart the computer and follow the directions. Take the defaults - they're the best choices for a beginner.

Do I need to defrag a big linux hard drive?
Q. I have a big hard drive (300GIGs) and wonder if I can do something to get better performance out of it. I run Ubuntu Linux. Is there something like de-fragmenting or optimizing the hard drive for linux? The file system is ext3.

A. If you are looking for extra speed I suggest backing up your data and upgrading to Ubuntu 9.04 which supports ext4.

How to make Minecraft run faster on LinuxIUbuntu?
Q. I have the latest version of Minecraft and a Linux Ubuntu computer with 3.7GB of RAM and a 2.4ghz processor. When I had Windows 7 on my same computer everything ran fine but now I'm running at 1-2 fps on tiny with minimal setting. Any ideas what I should do?

A. I get much better performance on linux that Windows. Your problem is probably a video driver problem, or the lack thereof. If you are using a vesa or other generic driver, minecraft will not perform well.

How to add Commands on Minecraft server?
Q. I just made a Minecraft server via linux, can somebody walk me through step by step how to add commands? Also, how to whitelist and black list, also, how to create user groups? Thanks!

A. You need to give a little bit more detail, we need to know if you are using Craftbukkit, or just a regular server, as installing mods that give commands on Craftbukkit servers is WAAY easier, since you just add the jar file into a plugins folder, but on a regular server, each mod's installation varies and it can be complicated.

For white listing, go to the server properties file, then set whitelist to 'true' and then go to the whitelist file and add the usernames of those on the whitlist. A blacklist is not needed as anyone not on the whitelist will not be able to get in, or you can just use the /ban or /banip command that comes as standard.

What is the IRC address for Jupiter Broadcasting?

How to delete a Linux partition on hard drive?
Q. I have a PC that is currently dual booting Windows Vista and Linux Mint. I'm not that fond of Linux Mint and want to explore other options. Can I simply delete that volume and put it back with my Windows partition, or do I have to uninstall GRUB loader or anything like that?

A. Here is the action I recommend. Boot from the Linux Mint LiveCD and delete the Linux partition along with swap and extended using the Partition Editor (GParted)

Menu>Administration>Partition Editor (GParted)

Take care not to delete the Windows partition. Once you have deleted the above partitions you can resize the Windows partition to claim the space back that was allocated to Linux. This will be displayed as unallocated
http://www.dedoimedo.com/computers/gparted.html

Next you need to Reboot your PC with the Windows Vista installation disc. and repair the mbr. because GRUB 2 will have overwritten it. Follow the instructions as shown on the link below

What book i shud buy for linux ubuntu if i have never work with linux before?
Q. What book i shud buy for linux ubuntu if i have never work with linux before?

A. I'd recommend the book written by the Ubuntu team:

http://www.phptr.com/bookstore/product.asp?isbn=0132435942&rl=1

You can find cheaper prices on sites like eBay:

http://search.ebay.com/official-ubuntu-book_W0QQfromZR41

Since you've never worked with Linux, I'd suggest you either download or order a free Ubuntu "live" CD. You can run Ubuntu from the CD without actually installing it on your computer. This gives you a chance to work with it. At the end of the day, take the CD out and your computer will never know you were using Ubuntu.

How do you take dial up internet in Ubuntu linux?

Q. Also please mention how can you login as root? I am new to linux and am self learning it.. i cant install new packages also.. also should i do anything special to install my modem in ubuntu.. theres a folder named linux in the drivers folder of my modem cd.. but doubleclicking the driver file in the folder doesnt yield any results..help ?

A. there is a program called KPPP.. on application menu >> Application >> Add/Remove >> on "search" box just type in "KPPP" and on "show" box select all available application... you'll see 2 programs, KPPP and KPPPLogView.. select both and click Apply..

In ubuntu, there's no need for you to login as root.. if you want to install a program (a firewall as example) just type "sudo apt-get install firestarter" at command prompt.. sudo enables you to run admin/root command.

installing a modem driver that are not PnP in ubuntu requires a little knowlegde about linux.. 1st.. you have to read readme.txt, how to install documentation in that linux driver's folder.. some driver requires special care and special command. 2nd. Surf the web for the latest driver and download it.. 3rd Double clicking driver file wont let you go anywhere.. please read all documents in that folder and you might find commands like this ./configure, make, make install.. so read the instruction.. if you still have problems installing the modem driver.. feel free to zip and email me those driver files

How can i compress hundreds of files into separate 25mb zip files?
Q. I am trying to put thousands of files on to my website My server will only allow me to upload 25mb files each time. Sooo. I was wondering if there is a certain program or a way to make thousands of files into separate 25 MB zip files. And only zip can't do anything else

A. Stuffit may be able to do what you're asking. It can compress to most formats and is available for Mac and Win (maybe Linux too). You can also set it to split files over a given filesize into segments so you can set a 25Mb limit for filesize.

How to turn a Minecraft seed into a zip file?
Q. My friends and I are trying to make take the DivideByZero Minecraft seed for our online server, but I am not sure how to do it. Does anybody have a link to a .zip file, or know how to make this seed into one? Thanks!

A. This method assumes that you have a world by that seed in your saves list.
Are you on a Windows or Mac (or Linux)?
If you are on a:
Mac, go to your home folder (the folder named your username), open Library, open Application Support, open Minecraft, then saves, and then zip the folder called the name of the world. There you are!
Windows, open up a program called Run (in Programs/Accessories) and type in %appdata% and hit enter. Open up .minecraft, then saves, and then zip the file called the save.
Linux, open up your home folder and press Ctrl-H (to shop hidden files), and look for .minecraft. Then find the saves folder, and zip the save.
