Is it possible to have both Linux AND OS X Leopard installed on my Powerbook G4?

Q. I am looking at installing Linux on my Powerbook G4, but I don't know if I should.

Say once I install Linux...will I be able to use Leopard any more? Can I pick which OS I want to run when I boot up my computer?

If so any help will be appreciated because I am downloading the Linux ISO right now.

A. Yes.

Does anyone know where to find a iso image of linux that will run vmware player?
Q. I am looking for a linux iso image that will install on a computer that has vmware player built in so that I can host vmware images.

A. Select distribution at DistroWatch.
http://distrowatch.com/

How do I install the Linux to my computer?
Q. I had download the Fedora Linux with ISO extension. How do I install the Linux to my computer another hard disk partition. Can anyone shows me the way?

A. Yep - follow any of the online guides. But first things first, you need to burn the ISO image(s) to CD/DVD using a program like ImgBurn, then reboot with the disk in your drive.

What distro of linux works best with world of warcraft? also kde vs gnome which one?

Q. I've tried playing wow on ubuntu through wine, and the graphics are all chopy at low settings. But when I play in windows 7 the graphics are fine? Is there a better distro that will not make the game so choppy? (Like emulate windows drivers) also is arch linux, gentoo, or saybian good for this game or 3d drivers in general?

A. The choice of distro does not really affect performance to that degree; the presence of suitable drivers does. You may wish to try installing the proprietary drivers for the video cards.

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/Nvidia
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/ATI

The choice of KDE or GNOME should not really impact gaming, though you may need to disable Compiz or compositing in KDE temporarily. Arch Linux and Gentoo do not ship proprietary drivers by default. Sabayon does include them, but that is because of a difference in opinion / politics, not technical.

What is the best lightweight Linux distro for my computer?
Q. I have a Compaq Deskpro EP/SB with Pentium II 333MHz processor (256MB RAM). I need a lightweight Linux operating system that is fast and reliable. I have tired Peppermint OS but it is too slow on this computer. I don't like Puppy Linux, nor Macpup. I need something different.

Thanks :)

A. Hi
With your processor and amount of ram you have to go with a puppy derivative. Puplets
http://puppylinux.org/main/Puplet%20for%20special%20features.htm

DSL (Dam small Linux)
http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/

Tinycore.
Tinycore requires alot of work.
http://distro.ibiblio.org/tinycorelinux/

Bodhi Linux
http://www.bodhilinux.com/

Gentoo Linux
http://www.gentoo.org/

Lubuntu.
http://lubuntu.net/

Look on distrowatch and do a search for small linux distros.

To be frank puppy has the best support of all the medium Linux distros via the murga forums.
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/

you wont get a snazzy desktop to run with those computer specs.

What linux distribution do you recommend?
Q. If you want to learn how to adminster Linux systems properly, not simply for use as a Windows replacement?

A. This are the most common distros. I DON'T RECOMMEND ANY OF THIS to learning linux at sysadmin level:
Red hat (or centos or fedora)
Ubuntu (or Mint)
Suse

All those distros are designed to be user friendly and easy.

You need a distro that keeps configuration plain and simple, instead of trying to hide it with a nice gui.
I RECOMMEND YOU:
Arch Linux
Gentoo
linux from scratch

I have used archlinux myself, and I can tell you is really easy to learn AND does not hide any of its configuration using guis.

Archlinux has a GREAT wiki, so, even if you are going to configure all by yourself, you'll have great step-by-step guides.
I don't recommend you archbang or sabayon, since they hide their configuration, and its not what you want (You want to learn!)

And that's it. I'll leave you with this from the arch linux wiki:

Whereas many GNU/Linux distributions attempt to be more user-friendly, Arch Linux has always been, and shall always remain user-centric.
Arch Linux targets and accommodates competent GNU/Linux users by giving them complete control and responsibility over the system.
Arch Linux users fully manage the system on their own. The system itself will offer little assistance, except for a simple set of maintenance tools that are designed to perfectly relay the user's commands to the system. Arch developers do not expend energy re-inventing GUI system tools; Arch is founded upon sensible design and excellent documentation.
This user-centric design necessarily implies a certain "do-it-yourself" approach to using the Arch distribution. Rather than pursuing assistance or requesting a new feature to be implemented by developers, Arch Linux users have a tendency to solve problems themselves and share the results with the community and development team â a "do first, then ask" philosophy. This is especially true for user-contributed packages found in the Arch User Repository â the official Arch Linux repository for community-maintained packages.

Whats the difference between Linux and windows hosting? Do i need Linux on my system to linux host?

Q. Whats are the advantages and the disadvantages of Linux hosting? why is it cheaper ? If I make a website in Dreamweaver and Flash CS5, can I Linux host?
Do I need to be wary about something?

A. All websites today currently run on either a Windows web server or a Linux-based server. The vast majority of websites run on a Linux-based platform as Linux has a strong reputation for security and web server performance. With standard (static) HTML-based websites, the web hosting platform doesn't make much difference. When it does make a difference, however, is when the website uses a dynamic scripting technology such as ASP (A Microsoft based technology), or PHP / PERL (Linux based technologies). A Windows-based hosting solution will run a Microsoft Windows server with IIS (Internet Information Server), and is necessary to run an ASP / ASP.NET scripted website. A Linux-based platform is typically used for PHP, Perl, and most other types of websites. Basically, unless your website uses ASP (pages ending in the .asp extention), Windows hosting is not necessary.

As an experienced webmaster I recommend BH web hosting which Iâm sure it would work for you and fulfill all your requirements. They have a really great offer for hosting & I have used them for over 3 yrs now, and have never had a single problem with them.

You can reach reviews about this web hosting provider and its latest DISCOUNT COUPONS at:

Only $3.95 /month (with discount coupon)

BH is compatible with Dreamweaver, just refer to:

Linux users - does the Linux firewall block/make it difficult to watch video or film online?

Q. I am learning about Linux because Im thinking of changing my OS to Linux and trying to find out some pros and cons. I sometimes stream film from sites or watch you tube and Im wondering if Linux will interfere with this.

A. Linux won't really need a firewall. I run a number of Linux machines without any security software and they're fine. Linux is a lot more secure than Windows (Or Mac OS, for that matter), and because it's not used as widely, less viruses are produced for it.

The only issue you might have is that Flash isn't very well supported in Linux - you won't get very good frame rates in full screen, high quality video. Still, if your computer's powerful enough, it should be fine.

Linux is a fantastic platform, which is rapidly becoming more and more user friendly. I urge you to try out Ubuntu, from http://www.ubuntu.com. From there, you can create a Live CD, so you can test Ubuntu without installing it!

Should http traffic be blocked to enable non transparent proxy?
Q. Hello everyone,
I would like to know if HTTP traffic should be blocked on Linux based firewalls to enable non transparent proxy (ie automatic redirection to a login page when a user tries to open any webpage).
Thanks...
P.S:The firewall I'm using is ENDIAN firewall.

A. I think you're more interested in port forwarding than blocking in this case.

Say if I've got squid running on my firewall box and it's accepting connections on port 8080, Web browsers are still going to send requests off to port 80 for HTTP and port 443 for HTTPS requests. It's just the way they work (unless you override it with the :portno at the end of the domain name).

It's the firewalls job to redirect port 80 requests to port 8080 where the proxy is listening and then the proxy can handle the request on behalf of all the hosts you've got on your LAN.

How to connect to fedora server 2.0 from win xp using puTTY?
Q. i have a fedora 2.0 server and i want to connect it from my windows xp. i can connect to another linux firewall on same network but i cant accces the fedora 2.0 server why? i use puTTY 0.60. plz help

A. What happens when you try? There are lots of different possibilities, but without knowing what goes wrong, it's hard to say.

1) An SSH server might not be running.

2) The server might only accept SSH1 connections and you might be attempting an SSH2 server with puTTY.

3) The SSH server might be running, but a firewall or TCP connection rule may be disallowing your connection.

What is the best Linux Distro for an old PC?

Q. Hi!
I have an old PC lying around with a 2.6GHz Pentium 4 and 512MB RAM. What good lightweight linux distros would work with it?

A. Your machine looking at the specs. will run Linux well although you may want to consider increasing the RAM to 1gb

I thoroughly recommend Linux Mint 9 LTS which is built upon Ubuntu 10.04 LTS its easy to install and easy to use plus it comes with much of the software you are likely to need preinstalled

You download the ISO. image of Linux Mint 9 LTS then you need to create a Bootable LiveCD for installation
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto

Linux Mint 9 LTS can also be run direct from the LiveCD from Boot without touching your Hard Drive

Once you have installed Linux Mint 9 LTS you can bring it up to date with easy tweaks like upgrading the Kernel to 2.6.38 and installing Firefox 4

Are you suppose to use different linux distros if you have different purposes?
Q. Or can all linux distro do almost the same if you know the terminal command or scripts? For example if i wanted to do some penetration test with back track but i want to surf the wow anonymously with incognito? Do i have to do them seperately or can i kinda combine them together in one.

A. Terminal commands in almost all Linux distributions are the same commands. Penetration Testing (Forensic) Linux distributions do not make a very good desktop, for everyday use. It doesn't make very much sense to do it on your own hard drive. In most Linux distributions, I believe in the package management program you can find anonymous browsing software to install. And yes one Linux in general can be over bloated with software to your desire.

How can I install 2 or more Linux distros on 1 HDD?
Q. Hi everyone

I want to install 2 or perhaps 3 Linux distros on my notebook. I have a 160GB HDD. How many partitions should I have?

Thanks in advance.

A. One partition for each distro (ext3, ext4 are recommended), and one smaller swap partition.

Can Linux Fedora 17 run on an old laptop?

Q. I have a laptop with an Intel Celeron M 1.4 GHz processor and 256 MB of RAM. How well can Linux Fedora 17 run on that? I checked the release notes but could not find anything definitive.

A. Try one of the Fedora spins with a lighter-weight desktop.

How do I maintain my privacy on a Shared Network? I use Linux/Fedora.?
Q. I use someone's network in my home (roomate's) and my system is Linux/Fedora. How do I make sure that someone cannot look and see what sites i'm visiting, my passwords etc? A step by step would help.

A. First, always use secure http for web sites that have accounts (username/password). Your password will be encrypted (usually via openssl). So no one snooping your local home network can see any login passwords. Likewise, always use secure shell (ssh) for shell logins. Same reason.

The IP addresses of the sites you are visiting, however, will be available to anyone snooping your network connection. You might be able to hide those through a proxy service, but unless they encrypt the target IP address (or URL) you can still be tracked by your room mate.

Look into "Tor", for example.

How to setup in linux fedora?
Q. I have just installed linux fedora and im trying to print something but cant.My printer is a Canon M240 and when i hook it up to fedora it say no printer drivers for this printer is there anyway to get the drivers

A. i am sure someone in some linux forums will have a compatible driver available.
that being said.... linux like ANY other os will require proper configuration before it utilizes the true benifits of a linux system and become secure

How would computing look today if Bill Gates and Microsoft did not establish themselves in the world market?

Q. Would the software we use today in general be better e.g. more advanced and faster than it is currently?

A. It would be as good, maybe better. Back in the day there were plenty of good operating systems and software packages competing with Microsoft. Gates bought them, outmanuevered them, or bludgeoned them with brute force marketing muscle.

I used and preferred Novell DOS (aka DrDos, originally from Digital Research) to MS-DOS. It required less memory, ran better, and had more features. SuperCalc, QuattroPro, and even Lotus were far superior to Excel in price, performance, and features.

Even today, I use Openoffice instead of Microsoft Office. I've been using Windows as an operating system only because I haven't had time to investigate Linux alternatives.

How to connect to a mySQL database on a Linux machine from Windows terminals?
Q. Im planning on a new setup for our office, a Linux server that will have the mySQL database, all other terminals have windows OS like WIn98, Win2000 and tey will need to access the database from the Linux server how to do it?

A. There are so many ways, but I'd recommend making your application web-based and server-side only and access via a web browser. Ancient, unsupported systems like Microsoft Windows 98 are barely able to function in todays world.

Go for a LAMP system.

Why is there a difference and what is it between assembly language in Linux and Windows?
Q. I am just wondering why the assembly languages for Windows and Linux are different since they are both based on the x86 architecture. And is there a basic assembly language that doesn't rely on an OS? And if so, what is it?
Ok, if they are the same, then why do the different OSs interact differently with it and is there a way to bypass the OS so that you can just program directly to the computer?

A. For a particular architecture (i.e. CPU type) the assembly language is the same. Realize that even modern intel CPUs have different instruction sets but in general most compilers stick to common instruction sets shared amoung all intel CPUs unless advanced instruction sets (aka extensions) are specifically enabled. MMX was one such extension.

Assembly really doesn't have much to do with device IO or drivers since assembly is *below* the operating system. In assembly, you write to or read from (poke/peek) memory locations which may be mapped to devices or be actual memory. If you are actually programming in assembly (not in a compiled language) then you'd just have to know what locations mean what. This "abstraction" is what the OS and compilers provide to higher level languages.

What you are confused about is binary executable format which *is* os dependent. Every executable binary contains information in it that helps the OS know how to run it and what it's called and so forth. Binaries contain the assembly instructions that needs to run but modern binaries are also often not self standing. The "assembly" code in a binary has to be "loaded" and run along with any other "shared" binary code fragments (i.e. shared libraries). This is where the portability breaks down. On the hardware abstraction side, there is also some runtime adjustments that the OS has to do in order to map the right locations into the assembly code. This is because hardware today are not in fixed predictable locations. The bios can move a device from one memory address to another at boot time or even at run time. This is basically what PnP is. It provides a way for the OS to modify how the bios positions hardware in memory to avoid conflicts. That is why if you are running an OS that is *not* PnP aware, you need to disable the feature in the bios so that the bios will initialize and fix those parameters for the hardware at boot time. Once the OS is done with relocation and device mapping, the "code" that is sent to the CPU is assembly and for all intents and purposes this code would be basically the same no matter what OS is used.

So what are some binary formats that are shared... well, ELF is one. Elf is used on various Unix and Unix-like OSs such as Linux and Solaris. Unfortunately binary compatibility is not a useful reality because it requires all the shared components to be compatible versions and format. In a sense, the WINE project in Linux is an attempt to emulate the Windows HAL (Hardware Abstraction Layer) in order to "load" a binary and do all of the necessary relocations for IO and shared components that windows does and then send it to the CPU. In a way, WINE is an attempt to create binary compatibility with windows "EXE" files.
