If the free market is as effective as Libertarians insist, then why are the most popular software programs?

Q. Also the worst ones on the market?

Microsoft sucks, the only company out there that's clearly worse than Microsoft is Apple. Linux software is free, and is FAR superior to either Windows or Apple, yet people are afraid to try Linux Mint or LibreOffice.

How can anyone try to claim that the free market is a superior means of distributing information when the modern state of software very clearly proves that is not the case?

A. The software is bad because the management wants it to be bad. The capabilities of our computers is limited in order to increase profits for the big companies. Apple is particularly guilty of preventing their hardware from being compatible with popular software that isn't theirs. A good example is the recent update that prevents Google Maps from working on Apple products.

What's the best software to make simple 3d images ?
Q. Say, comparable to n64 level characters?

I can use either windows or Linux software. Blender has been getting on my nerves because it won't work on Linux and I haven't gotten to downloading on windows yet

What is the program language used to make the ipod softwares?
Q. I know that, there is linux softwares for ipod and a lot of hacking that is really usefull but, i need to know what is language used to make a regular program to ipod. Like if I'm going to program a website I can use PHP or ASP, or if I'll program to windows I can use visual Basic or C++. Thanks!

A. Most projects in Linux are done in C especially if its related to the OS. Only recently has C++ become part of the OS.

iPodLinux creates it own operating system and stores it on the iPod. It would very likely be written in C.

Could I build a Linux system on my old Pentium 1 PC?

Q. It's been sitting around in my basement for years, but I think it still works. Just the OS (Win95) is corrupt so it won't boot. I have been interested in Linux for a while, but couldn't risk a primary PC to play around. I just thought of using my old Pentium PC.

If I recall, I can boot in a DOS Safe mode. How would I get started?

A. Okay!!!
Yes.
Now... Modern Linux.. Your Ubuntus and your Mints and Fedoras and such.. they are also going to be too much for that p1 to swallow.

Guess at specs here but lets shoot low.

you have 3 gig hdd, 128 megs ram, clock speed 166 mhz. MMX processor.

I'd try CrunchBang, (#!) or DSL, or Feather.
http://crunchbanglinux.org/
http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/
http://featherlinux.berlios.de/

The installs on those are going to be a bit harder than a modern distro on a modern computre, but the benefit is, (besides a working computer) by the time you get it all set up, you'll actually have a pretty good idea of how to drive.

HP Pavilion DV6000 Wifi not working with Crunchbang Linux?
Q. Just installed crunchbang on my hp pavilion dv6000 and wifi is not working but ethernet is. What packages do i need to download?

A. I think you need the b43-fwcutter package.

Im scared to by a laptop because of windows. How do i return windows and us linux instead?
Q. Ive been told it's a difficult thing to do - return windows. Does anyone have experience with this issue?

A. These people are wrong. It is illegal to use Windows if you can't read, understand, and agree to the EULA. If you don't agree to the EULA (you have to agree to the licence, to have your operating system on loan and not own it, grant Microsoft the right to have backdoors into your private system etc) - then you are not legally allowed to use it. People are ignorant, they ignore this and just think it's okay to use it anyway. Stupid people! So if you refuse the EULA, you're entitled to a refund BUT the vendor will charge you more to remove it than you'll save.... (source - German friend who bought from Dell, he paid $75 extra)

You can try to order your laptop - depending on where you live. Some friends of mine (one in Germany, the other in UK) bought Dell xps1330 computers with linux installed.

It wasn't cheaper, but they were happy that Microsoft didn't manage to force them to pay a tax!!! That's right, even if you delete Windows after buying it, you still paid Microsoft!!!

You cn try to buy a laptop with NO operating system (freedos or whatever) but in the end, you're better off playing around.

If you get some experience, then you can install something like 'crunchbang' linux, which is so light on resources - it would make your computer work ten times better than with XP. So fast it makes your nose bleed!

If you want features, then I'd recommend Ubuntu. There's a 'eeepc remix' which can install from USB with some skill...

but basically, install Ubuntu yourself isn't too hard - just check forums for problems with certain laptops - or just call up Dell and tell them you want Ubuntu preinstalled, and ask what models they're offering (easy in USA I think - strange how USA doesn't force Microsoft on their customers - but I know that DELL UK are very arsey about it, and can be rather abrupt on the phone!)

Go for it - my ubuntu desktop has been getting faster all year long - ready to upgrade to Jaunty very soon, exciting ;) but I do keep XP installed, as I have a good graphics card and run windows games. (I disabled internet for XP and it has a 40GB space on the drive - the rest of the 320GB drive is for linux - the filesystem never let me down).

Good luck, enjoy ;) any problems, buzz me or just get down to ubuntuforums

click the link and make an account ;) keep in touch

What version do I have to start learning linux?

Q. Which version do I have to start learning linux? What version is commonly used in the enterprise? Do all Linux versions have the same command? What is the difference between the versions of linux?

A. Any. All.

Redhat, Debian, and Ubuntu are common in enterprises. CentoOS is a free version of Redhat.

distrowatch.org.

...

How much can learning Linux help with an understanding of PC hardware?
Q. I'm a good technician, but I'm pretty average when it comes to my knowledge of hardware. I'm looking to kill two birds with one stone by learning Linux.

A. Having Linux as your OS does not help with understanding hardware.

I've been building Intel x86 based systems since 1987 and using linux since 1992 in the Yggdrasil days, while you may have to understand hardware to some degree when installing the Linux OS it's not a pre-requisite as much.

Linux has a stronger network based connection to the hardware then does Microslop or Frapple. In order to understand the complexities of many of the features of Un*x based system you have to know networking essentials. Specifically TCP/IP networking.
Most of the applications served up on Un*x are based in the TCP/IP suite of protocols. Except GIMP, Open Office or emacs or vi.
In the darkages when I was using DOS 3.0 writing batch files was pretty much a normal daily activity, now I spend my days in a vi screen writing shell scripts, sql statements or php scripts.

The way to learn is to do.

How long does it take to learn LINUX?
Q. How long does it take to learn linux?
Choosing between Linux & Sql Server 2005?
Choosing between Linux and Sql server 2005??
IT jobs require 3 years of experience so how do I get in??
I am between 2 choices:
Either learning Linux and try to learn as much as i can home but it might take me 2 years to be good and marketable.
Maybe less what do you guys think?

I am also considering learn SQL Server 2005 to become an assistant DBA.

But even if I have lab to practice both jobs positions
require 3 years of experience.

So my question is job wise what do you recommend me to learn ? Linux or SQL Server 2005?

And if the requirement are 3 years of experience how do I get into the field?

I am 49 so I need to get myself established soon.

Thanks.
I have no IT experience.

A. Can you try a little of both to see which you prefer? Linux is a free download. Get yourself 5 CD's, download and install Fedora and play around with it. Even if that takes you 3 days, that's a small investment to help you decide if you want to spend the next 3 years doing it for a living.

Or, download cygwin (a free unix shell for Windows) and learn to write a few shell scripts.

I don't know how you would try a little SQL Server, but there might be a free evaluation download. You will probably need a book to help you play around with this.

In summary, you can teach yourself just about any computer technology for the price of a fat book ($60) at Barnes and Noble or Borders and a lot of persistence. Persistence and patience may be the most valuable personality traits for a programmer.

Sure, we all get lazy and sometimes have to do things we don't want to do, but if you are totally unwilling to teach yourself difficult things, then you may never excel in the field. Look into management or some related field instead.

How to invoke the Linux Terminal in LINUX when a process becomes unresponsive?

Q. If a process becomes unresponsive in WINDOWS then we press "alt+ctrl+del" to invoke the task manager & then terminate the process. Is there any similar way to invoke the Linux Terminal so that we can end a process by the 'kill' command when it becomes unresponsive?Any help would be gladly accepted.

A. Whether you are in an x-windows session or working at the console command line, an equivalent in Linux would be to select a new virtual terminal using the key sequence CTRL-ALT-F-Key.

For example, from the console, CRTL-ALT-F1 will open virtual tty1, if it has not been disabled by configuration. Once in the screen for the virtual terminal is displayed you can log in with appropriate permissions to use 'ps' to determine the process that you need to kill as you would normally do as indicated in your question. To return to the console use CTRL-ALT-F7.

For completeness, if you are at the command line you could begin a program by running it in the background, so you can do other things during it's execution. If a program that is running, but which is not in the background, is stuck your first step should be to try CTRL-Z, to terminate it. If that fails try a virtual terminal.

As has been suggested, you could also access the system remotely if you have other systems on the network that could be used. Doing so, requires appropriate services, such as 'sshd', be running in advance of the problem. Similarly, you should experiment with the virtual terminal feature in advance of a problem to assure that it has not been disabled and so you can see how it works.

How do I connect to my Linux computer?
Q. I want to be able to use some remote console to connect to my Linux terminal and send commands, what kind of server do I need? Is there a client for Windows?
I downloaded PuTTy but what server do I need? Midnight Commander is just a file manager, I need full access to my terminal.
Ok, I found telnetd. Thanks all !

A. if you just want to access a terminal session then configure SSH and use PuTTY to connect. If you want full control of your Linux desktop, then use VNC (comes in both Server and Client components and is cross platform - so yes, it does support Windows as a client)

How do i get color back into my linux terminal?
Q. I recently changed the color of my linux terminal from the standard black text and white background to a black background and light blue text. When the default colors were used directories and certain file types would show up in different colors, but when i changed the scheme it took away the colors. is there any way to get them back with a command or setting? Thanks in advance.

A. You will want to set the environment variable LS_COLORS in your .bash_profile or .bashrc file.

Check out the following web site that explains the variable and all of its parameters:

are there any games that are easy to download and install to my linux netbook?

Q. i'm having a great deal of trouble trying to install any games to my asus linux netbook 900. i don't have windows and find it impossibly difficult and complicated to understand the installation procedure.

are there any sites that allow games to be downloaded/installed and played offline by simply opening and/or extracting the files. without having to also downloads endless programs or updates in order to just play the game?

please avoid using techno-speak when answering.

thank you

A. If you go to your main menu and look for an entry that says Add and Remove programs, you should use that to install games, or any other software that you want. It will automatically download what is needed, install it, and put an entry in you menu.
Good luck

How do i install things on linux?
Q. Sorry if this is confusing :l
Basically i have just bought a new acer aspire one linux netbook, i want to install ubuntu so i can install wine. I do not have a disc drive on my netbook so i would need to use a memory stick to transfer the files. But when i download absolutely anything Xarchiver opens the download and i have no idea what to do when it has opened. How do i install it?
Thanks,
(:

A. Well the Aspire One ships with a custom version of Linpus Lite Linux.
Here is a good review
http://www.linuxhaxor.net/2008/09/15/linpus-linux-lite-review/
The fact is that Linux is Linux and adding wine or any other program works basically the same regardless of the version.
You can visit the Linpus website http://www.linpus.com/
You can also check the manuals http://www.linpus.com/help.php
Changing to Ubuntu is ok, but I simply don't see the advantage.

Linux is not difficult, just different than what you may be used to using.
You should be able to directly download and install most items from the notebook itself off any web connection.
Here is step by step how to install wine or just about any other app!

Whats are some differences between a laptop and a tablet?

Q. I know that a tablet is touch screen when you swivel it over, but are there any other differences? I want to know because the price difference is a lot.

A. The biggest differences between a laptop and tablet systems is that usually laptops have better speed CPU's and larger Hard drives. Now some tablet system run Window based software and others don't and you can even get a laptop with Linux.

I believe that Laptops are better designed then tablets in terms of handling you dropping them plus the usage. Because tablets for the most part touch and tap controlled you will see damage to the screen area much faster then a laptop. I think you have more flexibility with laptops as well since you add accessories much easier and software which some tablets won't run well you can use them for more things where tablets are designed more for kind of reading.

If you want to rotate your screen just buy a monitor that will allow that option which some laptops have on them.

That's some of the reason I like, hope that helps you out.

How do i use a kindle fire as a computer tablet?
Q. AI have a kindle fire 2. I am in drawing and stuff, but i really need a tablet. SO i asked one of my friends if a kindle fire can be used for a computer tablet. she said yes. I can't find anywhere with that kind of information. I need help.

A. A kindle fire uses type of linux like an android operating system. You can buy applications from Amazon and they run just like apps on a tablet. Just look for them on the kindle store.

What are some cheap graphics tablets for drawing on a computer?
Q. I want reliability and cost -$50. I'm inexperienced with digital art so if you could also share what problems may arise please inform me. I use Mac and Linux, not Windows.

A. There are very few for $50 unless you find something on eBay or get one that is used and very small size. This one is around $53: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16823166106&cm_re=graphic_tablet-_-23-166-106-_-Product
