My high school sister wants to major in business and wants to learn how to "do" Linux?

Q. I assume she's talking about Linux and Unix in servers, and not the user friendly distros like PCLinuxOS and Ubuntu, right? She's passionate and determined to learn. Where's a good place to get her started?

A. I would suggest learning how to program in C(Unix's language) because she is so determined and understanding C really helps understanding Unix. Then learn how to do some shell scripting and such.

The best thing for this would be to use the gentoo(http://www.gentoo.org) distro. You need a fast computer for this though because you're making all you're software from pure sources. If you have an okay computer(<1GHz CPU and <1GB of Ram) then it might be a little slow to install things. For this I recommend debian(http://www.debian.org/). Both have excellent documentation.

Also subscribing to a linux magazine is a good idea too. They are a bit expensive so if you can't afford it, I would suggest reading it at your local Barnes and Nobles or other bookstore.

The popular ones are Linux Journal(http://www.linuxjournal.com/) and Linux Format(http://www.linuxformat.co.uk/).

I learned UNIX and linux in like elementary school and I did this by basically trying to program new things. I think trial and error is the absolute best way.

here is a good tutorial: http://freeengineer.org/learnUNIXin10minutes.html

I hope you're successful and if you have ANY questions email me at iammisc@gmail.com.

What is the best Linux Magazine and/or book for beginners to linux?
Q. I just recently moved from windows xp to LInux and I would like to know how to fix dual boot problems. I learned a few things about the command line but I want to learn a lot more. I also need to know how to download and upgrade software like Adobe flash player and other programs. In other words I need a really good book or magazine that will help me get started. I would of course prefer something simple and fast.

A. Linux Journal

http://www.linuxjournal.com/

is the original Linux Magazine. Well, not the original but the oldest still running and widely regarded as the most authoritative.

Linux Format is the most expensive, about $15 here in New Hampshire. Nevertheless it almost always comes with an install or live CD or DVD and the articles are always of excellent quality. I strongly recommend picking up as many issues as you can afford:

http://www.linuxformat.co.uk/

Anything from O'Reilly Press is also well worth the money.

http://oreilly.com/linux/

Also there are forums, like th Ubuntu Forums (go to Ubuntu.com and look for them on the bar on the left) or the forums at http://www.linuxquestions.org ). There are also the Usenet groups which remain lively years after most have become moribund. comp.os.linux heirarchy is subscribable to via google groups. Oh, and many of the developers contribute to the last. Some of them contribute to Ubuntu forums too but Ubuntu assembles their OS out of packages from many sources so very few people work for them and those that don't you are more likely to run into on Usenet.

What is the best journal software?
Q. I want to start a journal on my laptop and I was wondering what journal software (that is free) is the best.

A. Notepad++ on Windows, TextWrangler on MacOS, Gedit on Linux

I have a windows operating system, I want to start a website.. Can i use a linux host on my OS? I'm sure i can

Q. Well, Planing on opening a video site. For people to upload videos..
And i was checking the host out . Linux hosting. I can use that on a MS machine correct?

A. You def can but I'm not sure if you can test a linux based website on a Windows based computer, locally... This may make it a bit hard to design ???

What should I know about Linux Hosting?
Q. If I use Linux Hosting, will I be able to use MS Publisher as a design template? If not, what design software do you recommend?

A. As a long time Linux geek, I have no love for anything made by Microsoft. Publisher is NOT a web design tool. Published is designed for making brochures, flyers, booklets, etc. The fact that you can convert a publisher file to an HTML format doesn't mean it's a web site tool. In fact, the HTML code rendered from Microsoft applications (yes, including FrontPage) is usually crap.

Their generated code contains a lot of proprietary stuff that's not standard in HTML, and it can cause problems between broswers.

here's what a Linux host usually has: Linux servers (Red Hat Linux is popular), Apache Web Server, MySQL for databases, and they usually support scripting languages like PHP and Perl. Some hosts will also provide support for Python and Ruby.

For web design, I always recommend a decent text editor that forces your to learn how to use XHTML and style sheets. once you have full control of how your content is built, you'll find yourself building much better web pages.

If you need a tool, try something called nVu. It's a free HTML editor that works on both Windows and Linux clients.

Learn to code in standard XHTML. Then, all your stuff will work for all clients, no matter what system you host on.

Whats the difference between Linux web hosting and Windows web hosting?
Q. Heya Please tell em what the difference is between linux web hosting and windows web hosting. I made my site by dreamweaver does that affect either of the 2 i should choose please tell me thanx!

A. Windows and Linux often use two different web server applications. Windows sites use the Windows IIS server, while nearly all Linux sites use Apache.

Linux sites focus on PHP, Perl and other open-source script languages for server side scripting. Windows-based sites use ,NET and ASP technologies. They might also offer support for PHP.

Linux sites offer MySQL as the database for backend content storage. Windows sites will probably offer SQL Server, though some offer the Windows versions of MySQL as well.

There shouldn't be any difference between the two if you use strict web standards in your HTML. However, you need to be aware of the fact that, since Dreamweaver is a Windows-only product, it may insert some non-standard things into your HTML. Frontpage also does this.

As long as you stick to accepted web standards and don't use any Windows-centric stuff in your site, you should have no problems with either one.

How to install a downloaded software [ like browser etc. ] into Red Hat Enterprise Linux?

Q. I have downloaded some software like a browser & anti-virus but unable to install those in my PC where Red Hat Enterprise Linux is installed. Please help me and tell me how to do that.

A. First, try looking in the package manager for those programs. That way, they download and install automatically.
Second, try looking on this forum:
http://www.linuxforums.org/forum/
Third, I don't know if this will help, but it might be useful some day:
http://www.thelinuxrevolution.net/Topics/Commands/How-to-install-a-linux-program-from-tar-gz.shtml

Why are some linux distros not free when linux is supposed to be free and open source?
Q. Anywhere I can download Red Hat Linux for free?

A. "Free and open source" means that you are free to modify, change, and yes, sell, programs based on that source code. Red Hat can sell Linux all it wants, provided it offers the source code to the customers. Red Hat makes most of it's money through paid support lines, not selling the product.

You can't download Red Hat for free, since it contains proprietary components that Red Hat wants you to pay for (and you really wouldln't have any use for them anyway.) You can, however, download a distro made up of all the free parts of Red Hat, and configured in much the same way. This distro is called "Fedora."

http://fedoraproject.org/

Where can I download red hat linux 9 free?
Q. I am a student of CSE 5th Semester. Please help me !!! How and from can I download red hat linux 9 free.

A. First you have to track it down, that might be a bit tricky since it is several years out of date.

You can get the latest version of RHEL from http://redhat.com/ and Fedora from http://fedoraproject.org/ - they are the two successors to the old Red Hat. (RHEL is commercial, Fedora is free).

If you really want to get your hands on the obsolete, unmaintained version then try ftp://archive.download.redhat.com/pub/redhat/linux/ - but they haven't fixed security holes in it for years, so I strongly advise you not to.

How can I open a zip file on a Linux OS?

Q. I reaceently installed the LInux Fedora OS in my PC and now the sound is not working, does anybody know what can I used and or do to open a zip file?
Thanks in advance

A. There is a program called zip or unzip. Do a yum install zip or yum search zip from the command line (as root) then unzip the file using that.

http://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/how-can-i-zipping-and-unzipping-files-under-linux.html

How to run a makefile in windows?
Q. I know at school we run it on linux but i have windows on my laptop and im using visual studios 2010 for C++ (express) - can someone please explain what i need to download/do to run makefiles?

A. I don't believe that Visual Studio has any facility for handling a "makefile".

What you can do is download the MinGW C++ compiler.

http://www.mingw.org

Unzip the download into a known location, such as "C:\mingw" on XP, or
"C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\MinGW" on Windows 7.

Calling that {mingw} to represent whichever case you have:

Set your PATH to include {mingw}\bin and {mingw}\msys\1.0\bin.

The MinGW package includes not only a C++ compiler, but a Bash shell script, awk, sed, grep, and a slew of other UNIX commands that will run on the Windows machine. For your interest, it happens to also include the "make" command, which will process your "makefile".

It might end up running the MinGW compiler against your C++ code, when you might have wanted it to use the Visual Studio compiler, but you can cross that bridge when you come to it.

Why wont my downloaded version of wordpress work?
Q. I downloaded wordpress from wordpress.org and it downloaded it as a zipped folder, I unzipped it but it is still just alot of documents and folders and files and I have no idea how to set it up. I know other people have had this problem, any advice?

A. you need a running server (apache/php/mysql). [apache is reccommended, but not required)
It might be easier to sign up for a free hosting plan, so you don't have to think about the server-part

However if you'd prefer to have wordpress on your own computer:
http://php.net/manual/en/install.php
http://httpd.apache.org/docs/1.3/windows.html
http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.1/en/windows-installation.html

I took it that you're a windows user, if you have a linux distribution on you computer, you should be able to find these software packages in the repositories

Does Tiny Core Linux have support for USB drives?

Q. If I boot into Tiny Core Linux into a live CD environment, would it be able to read and write files from a USB drive?

A. it should support USB..

What are some self persistent forms of linux?
Q. I need a form of linux that is persistent, and preferably between 10-900 mb in size. Some examples are: Tiny Core, Slax, Ubuntu, and Damn Small Linux. (DSL)
Yeah sorry im using a FLASHDRIVE to do this

A. All versions of linux are persistent after they are installed on the hard drive.
This will let you install linux on a usb flash drive and provide some space to preserve the changes you make while using the flash drive.

Are these Linux distros useable as virtual hosts?
Q. Are there pre-built packages for, or guides to build, programs like Virtualbox on Damn Small Linux, Puppy Linux, or Tiny Core Linux? Or is there any low resource OS's that I haven't listed that would be better suited for the task of being a virtual host? I am wanting to try it out on my current pc before I build one specifically for virtualization.

Also, is it possible to stream a virtual OS from a server so that all the processing is done there and not on the client PC? ( kind of how certain rental companies stream a game to your computer, allowing you to play it, even if your computer doesn't meet the requirements.)

A. I presume you have a decent server so it can run big apps, so try Puppy, it's up to date and capable, unlike those others which might be missing things. Or try Bodhi, which is Ubuntu with a E17 desktop. Fast, and you've got all the Ubuntu repositories.

Is there any Virtual Machine for mac that supports 3D acceleration?

Q. I want to have Visual Effects enabled on my Linux Virtual Machine (Ubuntu).

Good answer gets 5 stars!

A. No. There currently aren't any virtualiziers on the market which can emulate OpenGL. VMWare Fusion is able to emulate Direct3d for windows virtual machines, but it doesn't have support for the OpenGL renderer needed by compositing window managers in Linux.

How do I change the command line prompt to show just the login id.?
Q. This is on a linux virtual machine?

A. The easiest way to do it for all users is to edit the file /etc/profile.

There should be some lines in that file for setting PS1, which is the primary shell prompt. You can edit or add lines like this:

PS1='\u@\h:\$ '
export PS1

This will make the default prompt this, with a space after the dollar sign:

user@hostname $

How do I create user accounts using a script that reads a list of names from a file?
Q. It creates user accounts for each name. This is on a linux virtual machine.

A. You'll have to write a shell script that reads the names and information from the file one line at a time, then pipes it to a tool like adduser, which will then add the user information to the appropriate system files. This has to be done as root or with admin privileges.

How do I establish a linux operatings system that would be similar to windows?

Q. Linux is free right. So if I have to buy a new hardrive, I won't need windows which is expensive. But how do I know which I should use. There seems to be many different linux operating system.

A. There are many flavours so you need to decide what you want to do with it (use it as a server, as a desktop etc). There are distributions who offer Live CD's. You boot up from a Live CD and are able to test that particular distribution without actually having to install it until you decide it's good for you.

Search on the net for tips about choosing a linux distribution.

How do you think I should start and what distribution do you recommend for a beginner who plans on programming and the like?Any helpful suggestions will be appreciated.

A. I thoroughly recommend two Linux distros.

Linux Mint 9 Main Edition which is based upon Ubuntu 10.04

Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE) which is based upon Debian Lenny/Squeeze

Both are easy to install and use plus they come with much of the software you are likely to need preinstalled

HowTo install Nvidia Graphics Drivers on Debian
http://wiki.debian.org/NvidiaGraphicsDrivers#Installapre-builtmodule

Alternatively install Linux Mint as a dual-boot with Windows using mint4win without partitioning mint4win works the same as Wubi as described below (not available on Linux Mint Debian)
http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/wubi

You keep Windows as it is, mint4win only adds an extra option to boot into Linux Mint. mint4win does not require you to modify the partitions of your PC, or to use a different bootloader, and does not install special drivers. It works just like any other application.

mint4win keeps most of the files in one folder, and if you do not like it, you can simply uninstall it as any other application.

Boot in to windows insert the Linux Mint LiveCD and you will offered the option of installing inside windows which is where the mint4win installer comes in, you will be asked how many gigabytes you wish to allocate to Linux Mint (I recommend 8gb) then you set a password for your installation then click install and thats it.

Once Linux Mint is fully installed upon starting your PC you will be given a choice of which operating system you want to use Windows or Linux Mint

You download the ISO. image of Linux Mint 9 or Linux Mint Debian then you need to create a Bootable LiveCD/DVD for installation

Linux Mint 9 and Linux Mint Debian can also be run direct from the LiveCD/DVD from Booting up without touching your Hard Drive

How can I remove Linux from my computer and restore the partition space to windows?
Q. I have both Linux Mint 11 and windows 7 on my computer and I no longer want it on my computer so... ya, pretty much says it all in the title.

A. (NOTE: A page titled "How to uninstall Fedora" was added to the project wiki after this blog was published, as noted in the comment section below in a post titled "Contribution is easy.")

Try "remove Fedora."

Nothing.

Go to Ubuntu's official documentation site and search for "uninstall Ubuntu."

You won't find anything in the "official" documentation but in the "community" section you find two entries that state "Wubi allows you to install and uninstall Ubuntu...."

In an installed Ubuntu distribution, clicking on Help and searching for uninstalling or removing Ubuntu finds nothing. A link ârepeat the search online at the Ubuntu help pagesâ brings up a 404 â page not found.

If you look hard enough on the real community support pages you'll find a post from July 2007 titled "HowTo: Remove Ubuntu (& Restore Windows)" .

Have a cow
The post starts out: "Okay, I know some people are going to have a cow because I'm posting this."

(No kidding. Just take a look at the excoriating flames that are sure to appear in the comments section of this blog.)

OpenSUSE does better. A search there finds the page titled SDB:How to Uninstall Linux from December 2006. The page includes more than 1,300 words to describe various processes.

Go to Google and search "install Linux" and you get about 1,450,000 hits. Try "uninstall Linux" and you get about 16,800. "Remove Linux" gets you about 53,300.

Why is it so hard to find instructions to remove Linux and then so hard to actually do it?

Why can't you just easily find the uninstall procedure in a help file, and click a button and follow the instructions?

Windows makes it easy
Opening the Windows XP Help and Support Center and searching for "uninstall Windows" brings up, first thing, "Uninstall Windows XP" and a 5-step process from the Control Center.

Did you know that in a dual-boot install Linux will partition your hard disk and if you remove the partitions without restoring the Master Boot Record on your boot-up disk, your computer won't start?

Did you know you'll likely need separate applications such as fixmbr or fdisk or partitioning software to get your system back the way it was, hopefully having not lost any data? Or you may need to change a BIOS setting to boot to a Windows CD and use its "Recovery Console?" These all depend on your version of Linux. Again, openSUSE seems to do the best job in automating the process, with the "YaST2 Control Center."

Oh, and if that dual installation included Windows, and partitions were resized, "Microsoft does not support Windows installed on partitions manipulated in this manner."

So it's just you and that Linux documentation. Good luck.

Now, I don't have any great love for Windows and I like Linux. I really do. I'm going to use it and learn a lot more about it.

But if you're a newbie like me, you'd best be warned. Searching various Linux forums finds a lot of users who have had problems uninstalling the OS and have lost data in the process.

Go back to Windoze? You're stupid
And while there are some helpful Linux aficionados who try to help these people out -- and others searching for uninstall help -- there are too many posters who take the attitude along the lines of: "Why would you want to uninstall Linux? That's crazy. You must be stupid to want to go back to Windoze."

If you want to try Linux out while keeping Windows, it's a real good idea to try it from a "live" Linux CD/DVD instead of installing it on a hard disk. Iâve tried several. The response is slower, of course, but you get an idea of how it works and donât risk losing anything. For Ubuntu the Wubi installer accomplishes the same thing by treating Ubuntu as a Windows application.

Do your homework
If you do install Linux on a disk, make sure you do a full system backup. And make sure you have a bootable "rescue" or "system" CD. And really do your homework. Read up on disk partitioning and logical volumes and extended partitions and mounts; and GRUB and LILO bootloaders; and NTFS, FAT 32 and ext3 file systems; and gparted and maybe the commercial app Partition Magic -- which supposedly merges/resizes partitions without destroying data -- and so on.

Then read it all again. And be careful our there.

How to enter password by linux command?

eg: when you write a script to sudo root. then you will be asked to enter password.

What does it mean for windows users if basic knowledge of linux commands are required?
Q. For example FTP and Telnet both run Linux. So that would indicate that some basic konwledge of Linux commands is necessary. However, I am a Windows user...

A. FTP can run on Linux, but it doesn't always run on Linux.

You can run an FTP server on Windows and an FTP client on Windows. Same for Mac.

It is just a File Transfer Protocol. The protocol is cross-platform, not Linux-specific.

What's the best route to take for networking/repair?

Q. I'm just starting out in my trek to obtain a job in something dealing with networking and/or repair. I am thinking about certifications like the CCNA, MCSE, A+, and Linux certifications. I would prefer not to do degree work if possible. I'm not exactly looking for an extremely high-paying job: I'm fine with something on the lower strata perhaps making $15-$20/hr. Where should I go first?

A. CCNA is better than A+,

A+ is entry level stuff that basically says you know what a computer is, how it shoudl work. It's a bit of a joke, Getting CCNA will show you have the knowledge of A+

Are these certifications good to have for a high paying job?
Q. Comp TIA A+ technician
Comp TIA Network +
Comp TIA Linux +
Microsoft certification at the product level (MCTS- Microsoft certified technology specialist)

Can you get a good paying job to live well with these certificates?
I live in the Bay area in CA, so everything is really expensive, is this a good job to have in that area?

A. Throw in a BS in Computer Science and you should be able to get a very well paying job.

what are the most recognized and appreciated certifications in the IT field?
Q. Im not interested by unix/linux certifications....if they even exist!

A. will find out from my son after easter.

Where is the best source to have a custom hardware device designed and built?

Q. I am looking for a resource or a tech shop to custom design and build a hardware device to my specifications with embedded Linux. Where is the best place to find a firm who designs custom hardware devices?

A. You can TRY this place. I don't know if they'll do you any good or not but it's a start:

http://www.directron.com/contact.html

I just called them, myself, to see if they offered the services you describe, but they're in Texas and it's 8:45 pm there right now!...and they're closed.

How do I install python libraries?
Q. I have an embedded Linux device that is running an embedded version of python for it. The scripts I'm trying to run work great on my computer but wont run on the embedded Linux device. I looked into the matter further and found that two modules I am using, threading and signal, are not included in the embedded version of python. They are (I think) part of the standard python library. How can I get these modules and install them separately. I don't think I can put the standard python onto my embedded Linux device.

A. The module threading is a module located in the Lib directory (standard installation). You could try to place this file in corresponding location on your device. Signal is a built-in module. I suspect its platform-dependent and maybe not (yet?) implemented for your device. If your platform is windows CE for example, signal is not implement in the win CE version of python

Will a Linux operating system be difficult for somebody who used only Windows all life?
Q. Today I decided that I am officially tired with Windows and want to install Linux on my laptop. I read on a website all the pro and cons of each operating system ( Windows, OS, Linux) and discovered that Linux is the only one who had the pro list longer than the cons list. ( windows too vulnerable and Macs too pricey). In any case,in the Linux cons list it said that Linux should only be used by experienced computer users. I know my way around a computer but I cannot call myself and expert. Would it be difficult to transition from Windows to Linux if I am not a computer expert?

A. Welcome to the would of Linux based OSs!!

At one point or another most Linux users made that switch, and it can be difficult IF you try to use Linux (remember Linux is the kernel not the OS) like you use Windows. There is a learning curve that you must overcome. Things are just different, but not difficult. Years ago it was harder, but now, there are many distros (distributions) tailored to new users.

Since you already know the pros and cons, there is no need to discuss them. But when you start using Linux based OSs, you WILL be in "windows mode". This just takes time to overcome. Most people that tried Linux and said it was to hard, did not give themselves enough time to get out of "winblos mode".

When you install a Linux distro, you do not need antivirus, antimalware, firewalls, you do not need to defrag. You can install them if you like, but there is no real need unless it makes you feel better. If you stick to the repos (repositories - just to make it easier to explain - you can think of it like an app store that you use on your phone) you will be safe from malware.

Now the hardest part, at least for me, is to choose which distro. Go to distrowatch.com for info on hundreds of different distros.

Most distros are based on a few main distros. Here is an image to give you an idea how many forked from other distros:
http://files.cyberciti.biz/uploads/tips/2007/06/44218-linuxdistrotimeline-7.2.png

When I made the switch from winblows to Linux, here was my criteria:
1. made for beginners - you will have many problems if you jump to a distro made for experts
2. it must be a popular distro - the more people using it, the more help you will receive. you can ask on YA, in a linux forum, or people you know.
3 must look decent. I just don't like an ugly desktop.

Also, you can take almost any distro and add different desktop environments. You can think of the DE as the user interface. You can take Ubuntu, that ships with the Unity DE, and ad another, say KDE. But they do have this already, and called Kubuntu.

You can take Mint (which I recommend for new users) which you can choose form Cinnamon, GNOME, KDE, MATE, Xfce desktops. Or you can add others. Here is a gallery of some of the DEs:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Desktop_environment#Gallery

So I would suggest to get an 8 or larger USB flash drive (or what ever you have) and use a program called YUMI to install as many different distros on that drive as it can hold. You choose which distro to boot into on start up. This way you can try out many different distros.

Also try out many of the different DEs. There is no way to know which one is right for you. since they are personal choice. I recommend the KDE since you are coming from winblows. It is pretty and (to me) easier to use. So I recommend Mint with KDE.

There are other made for beginners. If you decide to use Ubuntu make sure that you have a wired internet connection when you install. Ubuntu does not use closed source or proprietary software (it a FOSS thing). It will ask when you install if you want to use restricted software. Mint ships with this software and works better out of the box.

There are distros made for just about anything. If you have an older computer, there are distros for old computers. If this is the case I suggest to not use KDE but one made for older or slower computers. Like LXDE (You can download Mint with LXDE). There are distros for media production, scientists, educators, security, privacy, embedded, etc.... Heck, you can even put Linux on your router, mp3 player, tv, and other devices.

Here are some others:

How can I open a zip file on a Linux OS?

Q. I reaceently installed the LInux Fedora OS in my PC and now the sound is not working, does anybody know what can I used and or do to open a zip file?
Thanks in advance

A. There is a program called zip or unzip. Do a yum install zip or yum search zip from the command line (as root) then unzip the file using that.

http://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/how-can-i-zipping-and-unzipping-files-under-linux.html

How do i create a Wakepup Floppy Under Linux?
Q. im switching between my xubuntu live cd to a Puppy Linux running from a USB FD, i downloaded Wakepup which allows your old pc to boot from your USB device but its a windows Installer, its design for windows and i dont have access to it right now. So how can i create the Boot up floppy under Linux?

A. I think you will find the information you need at:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=3875

Note at the top of the thread, there is a link for the WakePup disk image for version 2.0. The link for Version 1.0 {WKPUP11C.ZIP } is lower on the page.

The directions are for Puppy1 {wakePup 1.1c} so you will have to translate them as needed if YOUR's is Puppy2.

In a nutshell, once you have the proper image it needs to be uncompressed and written {as root} to the floppy using 'dd' in Linux. For example, assuming Puppy1:

# unzip WKPUP11C.ZIP
# dd if=WKPUP11C.IMG of=/dev/fd0 bs=1440k

BTW, WakePup is a Puppy boot disk using FreeDOS, with support for USB mass storage drives (CD-ROM, hard disk and flash), legacy parallel port drives (Backpack CD-ROM and Iomega ZIP) and legacy PCMCIA drives (Addonics or similar CD-ROM).

You may also find this link helpful if you want to create a boot CD version:

How to install linux fedora on a i586 system?

Q. How do I install linux fedora onto an i586 system? I tried the installation guide page, and the live cd mode is not compatible....and to do a classical install for this kernel, but my question is: WHAT is a classical install? Thanks!

10 points for best answer!

A. The live CD won't work, it assumes i686. You'll have to use the non live installer. Also a i586 system probably isn't powerful enough for the dynamic file system in RAM anyways.

Last I checked Fedora still did i586 kernel builds.

I recall an installer parameter, that you can boot it "linux i586" to force that architecture.

I do have a i586 system running CentOS 4, a rebuild of Fedora's commercial cousin, RHEL.

How can I install Linux fedora 4 on a computer with out using Virtual PC?
Q. I want to install linux fedora 4 on my computer to make it a server. But i want to do it so that it will run of the harddrive becaause i have a spare 250 gb that i want to use. So how can i put it on the computer itself instead of Virtual PC

A. You could repartition your hard disk, overwrite whatever existing system you have, or install a second hard disk.

Which ever you choose - get a more up to date version then Fedora 4, which is ancient. Go for Fedora 9 instead.

How to preserve "My Documents" while migrating from XP to Linux (Fedora)?
Q. Hi,

I want to get rid of Microsoft XP and install Fedora on my PC.
Is it possible to install LInux (Fedora) on my PC, preserve the contents of My Documents, and not make a backup somewhere out of the hard disk, where I am making the installation?

A. Hi, if you want to backup the files without using another harddrive then I would suggest partitioning your Harddrive before you install Linux.

Go to Start>Run and type "diskmgmt.msc" in the run command. Press Ok and a new window should open. In Disk Management right click the drive you want to partition (usually the C: drive), select "Shrink Volume..." and then enter the amount of space you want to partition in the new window. Make sure it is enough space to copy all your files to. Select "Ok" and a new partition will be created.

Then copy all your files to the new partition, install Linux over the partition where XP is installed, then move all your files from the new partition onto the partition where you replaced XP with Linux, and once all the files are moved back into Linux you can use "parted" or whatever disk partitioning software Linux has to delete the new partition.

As you can see this might be easier if you buy an external drive instead.

How to stop my ubuntu linux screen stop flashing while playing Frets of Fire?

Q. I'm using feisty fawn. It does that whether I'm in full screen mode or not.. I played with the video settings, and it does the same thing.. on every part of the game.

A. As good as Ubuntu 7.04 is its starting to get a bit long in the tooth now, besides support sadly ends at the end of October. I recommend you upgrade to Ubuntu 7.10 http://releases.ubuntu.com/7.10/ (My prefence) with which you can carry out a rolling upgrade via the Update Manager without the need for a reinstallation http://www.ubuntugeek.com/upgrade-ubuntu-704-feisty-fawn-to-ubuntu-710-gutsy-gibbon.html or you could upgrade to Ubuntu 8.04.1 http://releases.ubuntu.com/hardy/ however this would require a fresh installation. Either option I am almost certain would be a solution to the problem.

What are the different features from WINDOWS and LINUX when connecting a MP3 Player?.?
Q. I need the different features and display settings when opening LINUX.

If u can screen shot?

A. I recommend trying LinuxMINT or ZorinOS. These Linux distributions have all of the multimedia codecs pre-installed. When connecting an mp3 player in Linux, it will immediately recognise your device and allow you to transfer your files, much the same as you would transfer files to a flash disk. If you are new to Linux, I have several informative videos on Youtube. You can download the distro, burn it to disk and run it without installing to your hard drive. Check out linuxspatry.blogspot.com I hope this helps!

How to capture C and CPP files in the linux operating system?
Q. I am new to linux and have been trying to figure this out forever for a homework assignment! I am supposed to use appropriate linux commands to capture all "C or CPP" files in the linux operating system and make a list of the files. I am using Xubuntu. I am a beginner and could use any advice! Thanks!

A. What does it mean to capture a file??

If you mean to find the files and list the results, use the 'find' command to search for *.c and *.cpp files in the whole system. You will get the result on the screen, and you can redirect the output to a file.

To find *.c files:
find / -name *.c

To find *.cpp files:
find / -name *.cpp

Explanation: the "/" means to start the search at the top of the file system, meaning that the search will include all the system. The "-name" means to search by name, and "*.c" is the file pattern you want to find.

To redirect the output, use "> output_file" for example:
find / -name *.cpp > output_file

Hope it helps. See the manual page 'man find' to learn more.

is it possible to update crunchbang linux whilst running it from usb?

Q. i run my crunchbang from usb (to avoid the bothersome choice everytime i turn on my computer) is there any way for the updates to stick whilst running it from the usb?

A. No. I'm guessing that your distribution is running from an image on the USB. You'd have to update a real installation and create a new Live USB image.

And is the choice more bothersome than not being able to keep your distribution up to date?

How can i tell which files a specific process is using in ubuntu?
Q. I am trying to find out where a temp file for a program is being stored. im sure linux has a way of doing this (seemingly?) simple task.

thanks

A. I have 'conky' set up to give me information about top processes as part of my wallpaper - but I think for detail, you can go through GUI or terminal, up to you. You should search for information about conky in Crunchbang forums.

If you prefer mousey answers, then using GUI - open system monitor (add it to your panel, right click and open from there maybe) - processes, and view 'command line'

Problem is that GUI affects your system too much, so better open terminal (install terminator, it's very cool, also install cowsay cos that's really cool too)

type 'htop'

if it isn't installed, your terminal will tell you exactly how to get it ;)

I'm apt to think you'll get my meaning B-)

With terminator, you can actually run HTOP, and you can remove the scrollbar and window border too - and actually have just a display like a widget on your desktop. To move windows with no decoration, you press a modifier (usually ALT and drag with the mouse, but if you had problems with GIMP shortcuts, you should change the function for 'move' window to use 'ctrl+alt')

Ok? anything else? :P

What was your opinion when you upgraded from XP to Ubuntu?
Q. I am wondering what you think of Ubuntu when you upgraded from the outdated and insecure XP.

I used Ubuntu, and find it is far more complete and more secure then anything ever seen from Microsoft.

You can actually use it without no security software because everyone targets Windows.

I will never go back to Windows. (Note: This is from a person who said a few months back that "Linux is for script kiddies" or "Linux is only used to inflate your computer ego".

A. I really wasn't impressed when I installed Ubuntu 7.04 from a CD. I was happy with the 25 minutes installation time, but then had loads of stupid problems - firstly I couldn't connect to wireless internet, and then I had problems trying to mount things, and found that I had to manually edit text files to set some things up....

What else - well the first thing that started to change my mind is that whilst editing one text file, I restarted and had no desktop - it wouldn't load at all, and I decided to try something. I'd set up an alias already 'sudo apt-get install' is just 'install' on my system.

I typed 'install gnome-desktop'

And it did. Wow. Then with Ubuntu 8.10 most of the issues were ironed out - just eight months later!!! Hard drives just appear and I could just format to NTFS if I wanted to, great - good for USB's.

I still have XP - but gradually I used it less, and less, and less - and now it's only for Windows games - I disabled the networking. Ubuntu works perfectly straight from a fresh install of Jaunty 9.04 - Printer, Wifie, Monitor - everything is perfect from the start.

Summary - I wasn't impressed when I first tried Ubuntu, it's too different and seems harder.

Now, however, I laugh at the amount of time I took to install XP last year, because Ubuntu installs in 25 minutes - including drivers for most stuff (nVidia is a 5 minutes download, and I have .deb installers for my printer).

I also have XP in a virtualbox for anyting that refuses to run on ubuntu and has no decent replacement (i.e. ACDSee Pro2 for moving pictures from Camera to Computer because it has a couple of killer lighting adjustment tools).

I never missed Photoshop, it is too hard and complicated - and I learned to do ten times as much stuff in GIMP in just 6 months using it (than with 3 years working with Photoshop)

Then, of course, sekurity - forgot even how to spell that. Why do you need to worry about security with your computer? just make a strong password and it's finished right? Surely nobody would ship an operating system that is Insecure by default!!!

But I can tell you, if you get interested in something like 'conky' you'll start getting really interested to edit a text file and make it your own (google search for 'crunchbang' and 'conky' and find a really cool forum for it.

Mac is for inflating ego - Mac is the BMW (based on freeBSD actually, but with layers on top that aren't open) and priced like a Benz - it's over priced and fine for poseurs everywhere.

I actually like the Mac 'globalmenu' concept, so I found out how to install it on Ubuntu - nice way to save on vertical screenspace.

Join the party, go to linuxoutlaws.com and sign up for their very funny podcast (they do a really cool 'microwatch' section every week)>

You'll love it, it's a real blast :P

BTW - never use 'Automatix' but DO use 'Ubuntu Tweak'

How can I activate my graphics card driver in my Linux Mint Debian Edition?

Open a Terminal and submit the following command (copy and paste)

sudo apt-get install libgl1-mesa-dri-experimental

Close the Terminal and REBOOT

Questioning the mentality of Debian purists with regards to the spurning of Linux Mint Debian Edition.?
Q. It is quite understandable why there is noise from the Debian purists about Ubuntu and Ubuntu based distros. but Linux Mint Debian Edition surely they are spurning their own 'The Wonderful World Of Linux Politics'

Your thoughts ?

A. Mint Debian is the next Ubuntu, now that Ubuntu has gone off the deep end. This is assuming Clem finds competent help in developing it. Can you imagine Mint's tiny team serving a community as large as Ubuntu's? It's inhuman as it is, the stellar OS they put out for what seems to be the whiniest userbase of any distro (read the blog comments). Everyone has a completely uninformed, kneejerk opinion in the Linux world, so I just ignore the average user's crankiness. I doubt it's Debian purists who object to LMDE, more like Debian posers who think an OS is a status symbol. Ignore them. Mint Debian does need a bit of refinement --at least it did when a tried it a few months ago-- but I feel it's the future. We'll even get used to Gnome 3 somehow...we'll have to, and it's improving every day from what I can tell, though I don't use it.
Think of the whiners switching to XFCE because they don't like Gnome 3, or the huge hissy fit that erupted when KDE 4 was released. I sit in bemused observation of every supposed crisis. The open source community mostly consists of reasonable and knowledgeable people, it's the newcomers to Linux that form factions and are demanding; the same ones who throw a fit about every little bug but have never filed a bug report, and if they did file a bug report it would be more nonconstructive b1tching anyway. Don't even take them seriously.

How do i make Software for Linux Mint?
Q. I've used Ubuntu since 2007 and then in December of 2009 i installed Linux Mint and i love it!, but how would i make software for Ubuntu,Linux Mint or Debian? I have no idea. Where do i start what programs do i need?
I already know c but how do i do it in GUI?
I wanna make gui apps too though, how do i do this?

A. For building GUI applications under Linux, the two most popular tookits are GTK+ and Qt (pronounced "cute"). The KDE desktop as found on Mint has been built using Qt. I have used Qt toolkit and I think it is quite pleasant to program with it.

You basically need two things to start developing GUI applications on Linux:
1) Install the gcc compiler package (and g++ in case you want to do c++ as well)
2) Install the development libraries for the GUI toolkit of your choosing

For (1), you proceed through your package manager, or enter a command in a shell such as: sudo apt-get install g++

For (2), assuming you wish to use Qt, you have to download the Software Development Kit (SDK) of Qt found here: http://qt.nokia.com/downloads/sdk-linux-x11-32bit-cpp
You run this file and follow the wizard that will install all the development files for you.

Qt SDK also includes a nice code editor called Qt Creator which will greatly facilitate your job.

Once this is installed, I recommend starting the Qt Creator editor, and loading a couple of examples provided with the editor. Study them, and you will be able to write your own programs.

How can I install linux on multiple computers with the same settings?

Q. I have 7 computers that I would like to install linux on (CentOS to be specific). The computers are all slightly different in terms of hardware, some are Intel, others are AMD. I have to install a lot of packages. I would like to be able to just do all the installation work on one computer, and then clone that system to all the others and just change hostnames. Is this possible?

A. maybe is the simple answer,

partimage is the program to look at

http://www.partimage.org/Main_Page

i use it via knoppix live cd as you cannot image a mounted drive - so its a waste of time installing partimage on the first centos and trying to image it

you may need to install centos on an intel and an amd and image both,
only takes a few mins to image though

How do you list mountable usb devices on linux from terminal?
Q. I am using Damn Small Linux and would like to display a list of all connected usb storage devices and their names from terminal for example i would like to be able to figure out what my ipod would be when connected for example /dev/sda1 or whatever. Thanks in advance!

A. Actually what you want is probably a combination of "lsusb" and "dmesg | tail".

- Run lsusb before and after you plug in a USB device - it lists all the detected USB devices on the system. If you get a new device listed after you plugged in, you're on your way to mounting the device.
- The next step is to run "dmesg | tail". The dmesg command spits out the kernel log. The tail command will filter it to show the last few lines. You are looking for something like:

sd 15:0:0:0: [sdb] Attached SCSI removable disk
sd 15:0:0:0: Attached scsi generic sg2 type 0
usb-storage: device scan complete

As you can see in the example above, I attached a removeable disk which was assigned to sdb (of course yours might be sda, sdc, etc).

With a combination of the 2 commands above, and possibly doing a "ls /dev | grep <the assigned device node from above, like sdb>" you can find what devices you have available to mount. The reason you might want to do the ls is for devices with more than one partition.

What commands should i type in the terminal to display my system information in Linux?
Q. Thanks to the Yahoo Linux Community, i took my first step and installed Linux Mint Helina into my system. I play around with it a little and really like it but I do not have any knowledge on how to install any drivers.

I tried to install pcwizard so that i could see my system information but unfortunately the software is not compatible with Linux. I not sure what i need to do, its totally a new environment for me.

A. A couple of things you need to know about Linux and *nix environments.

First, Linux is not Windows, so nothing that runs on Windows runs on Linux. There are exceptions. Some popular Windows apps have Linux versions (Firefox, Thunderbird for mail, Adobe Acrobat Reader). There's also a tool called Wine that allow you to run Windows programs from inside Linux. But stick with just Linux for now.

One doesn't install drivers for Linux the way you do in Windows. Most hardware is automatically detected and configured in the installation process. Anything exotic might need to have a module or library installed, but you can nearly always do that through the software manager. Check at the Mint or Ubuntu forms for any assistance on this.

Also. look on the system menus. There are lots of tools that will provide all the information you need about your system.

Also, from the console, there is no one tool that tells you everything. Linux and similar systems include a wide variety fo smaller tools and programs, each of which handles a specific task. For example:

ps -ef (this will give you a list of all the currently running processes).

lspci (gives a list of all the hardware on various system interfaces)

mount (gives you a list of all currently mounted drives and storage devices.

When a list of things goes beyond a screen page, you can "page' the output by piping it through a pager tool like "less":

ps -ef | less

This presents the information a page at a time, and you press the space bar to read the next page.

What is the best linux version for a DELL Latitude D600 laptop?

Q. I have a DELL Latitude D600 that was passed down to me by my older sister. The XP on it has some bad malware and is generally corrupted. What would be the best Linux version to either replace it , or do a dual boot?
It is about 5 years old.

A. Almost any distro will install with a dual boot option. Which distro you install depends on how much horsepower you have and what you want to do.

Since there are over 300 distros, and a few CDRWs are pretty cheap, download a few that sound interesting and try them. DSL (Damn Small Linux) or PCLinuxOS minime might be good for a smaller computer, but Ubuntu might run well too.

They're free - take 2. Or 20. Have fun. That's what it's all about. (Until you decide to earn your living doing what you do for fun.)

What linux version is compatible with Broadcom wireless 802.11g card?
Q. I'm looking a linux version compatible with my wireless card but I dont seem to find any. I have SUSE 10.1 and it is not compatible, I think Fedora, Debian and others Ive looked are not either.

A. Wireless on linux?? You are very ambitious.

what type of linux version would i use to download a new version of Opera?
Q. i need Opera Browser 9 to have Flash Player 9 and everytime i try to download Opera 9 it gives me tons of like Linux versions and i dont even know where to start.
please help.
thank you.

A. Download and install the Ubuntu Linux, you will install any applications easly and quickly. Just (once installed) open the Synaptics (package manager), search by " opera ", mark it to install and wait the installation finish.

You can to do this with any applications.

How do you share the internet through a Linux laptop?

Q. Im trying to share the internet through a wireless connection on my linux laptop, through to my xbox 360 (via ethernet cable)

A. Bridging, for example, links the two network adapters so that Ethernet frames flow freely between them, just as if they were connected on a simple hub. All of the traffic heard on one interface is passed through to the other.

You can set up a bridge so that the computer itself does not participate in the network at all, essentially transforming the computer into an overpriced Ethernet repeater. But more likely you will want to access the Internet as well as bridge traffic between the ports. That isn't complicated, either.

Bridging requires the bridge-utils package, a standard component of every modern Linux distribution that provides the command-line utility brctl.

To create a bridge between your network adapters, begin by taking both adapters offline with the ifdown command. In our example eth0/eth1 setup, run sudo ifdown eth0 and sudo ifdown eth1 from the command line.

Next, create the bridge with sudo brctl addbr bridge0. The addbr command creates a new "virtual" network adapter named bridge0. You then connect your real network adapters to the bridge with addif: sudo brctl addif bridge0 eth0 adds the first adapter, and sudo brctl addif bridge0 eth1 adds the second.

Once configured, you activate the bridge0 virtual adapter just as you would a normal, physical Ethernet card. You can assign it a static IP address with a command like sudo ifconfig bridge0 192.168.1.100 netmask 255.255.255.0, or tell it to retrieve its configuration via DHCP with sudo dhclient bridge0.

You can then attach as many computers, hub, switches, and other devices as you want through the machine's Ethernet port, and they will all be able to see and communicate with each other. On the downside, if you have a lot of traffic, your computer will spend some extra energy passing all of those Ethernet frames back and forth across the two adapters.

How Do I Get Music On My Ipod On A Linux Laptop?
Q. I Need to get music on my ipod but i have a linux laptop, will itunes work or is ther another one i could use

A. You could try running iTunes through Wine, OR you could get software like Yamipod to do it.

It may require setting your iPod up as a flash drive beforehand though.

How do I convert my musical technology on my laptop into hardware?
Q. I have a linux laptop with synthesizers, loopers, etc. The laptop is a pain in the ass and 70% of the time I spend with it is troubleshooting. I was wondering if anybody has or had a setup with a looper, synthesiser, and drum machine that is all hardware. I also need to know where to find these. I am also not quite sure about something else: Would a midi keyboard work with a hardware synthesiser and looper. Much appreciation if this question is answered.

A. There are several stand-alone sequencers like the Yamaha QY series. Also, several beat boxes like Korg's Electribe series will output midi data which allows them to be used as both a source of sounds and a sequencer for other drum machines.

I too do not like using laptops live (although I have.) Too many thing to go wrong. If you do end up using a laptop, keep it simple with only a midi sequencer running (like Cakewalk, Cubase, Sonar, etc.) Once you get softsynths running, you're maximizing CPU and memeory resources and running the risk of a crash.

As far as loopers, there are several stand-alone models like the Boss LoopStation. Synthesizer workstation like the Roland Fantom or Yamaha Motif will also play loops, although those types of keyboards are very expensive.

Good Luck!

Q. hey i really want a desktop manager i looked a compiz fusion but it said i needed linux desktop. What Is That???
Also is there a better desktop manger besides compiz???????

I have tried yodm 3d but that didnt work at all.

A. To have Compiz you need to have Linux installed on your Computer

I thoroughly recommend Linux Mint 8 Main Edition which is built upon Ubuntu 9.10 Its easy to install and easy to use plus it comes with much of the software you are likely to need preinstalled (including Compiz)

You keep Windows as it is, Wubi only adds an extra option to boot into Ubuntu. Wubi does not require you to modify the partitions of your PC, or to use a different bootloader, and does not install special drivers. It works just like any other application.

Wubi keeps most of the files in one folder, and if you do not like it, you can simply uninstall it as any other application.

Boot in to windows insert the Ubuntu 9.10 LiveCD and you will offered the option of installing inside windows which is where the Wubi installer comes in, you will be asked how many gigabytes you wish to allocate to Ubuntu (I recommend 8gb) then you set a password for your installation then click install and thats it.

Once Ubuntu is fully installed upon starting your PC you will be given a choice of which operating system you want to use Windows or Ubuntu

How to connect to the wireless internet on HP 2133 with Linux Desktop 10?
Q. I have HP 2133 with SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10. I need help connecting to wireless internet. I have tried everything. I've clicked everything that say "Network" but when I attempt to browse the web, I am still not connected. Can someone help me?

A. iwconfig is the package that u need im not sure which package manager Suse uses u may prosper from determining what chipset ur mobo is using on the wireless NIC, usually either broadcom or intel, and u should visit the Suse site wiki and search for supported wireless cards, the drivers may be built in or u may be able to retrieve with package manager,,u may or may not be able to use ur wireless card,, u should be able to as linux includes drivers for many devices, u may even be able to use ndiswrapper to use a windows driver and inf file to use the device,, all depends on the card and if the drivers are available to u, for most normal cards they are there, u would use iwconfig like ifconfig to configure the wireless interface and query for info,, there are other apps in repos for browsing wireless networks etc, u usually need to edit a network conf file or rc.conf file to allow the interface to come up at boot with the proper config, this can be done once and last til the system dies on redhat it's /etc/sysconfig/networkscripts i've seen like /etc/network/network.conf i think on Ubuntu which is debian based,,, not sure for Suse though, probably very similar, when u make the changes to the conf files u can just restart networking /etc/init.d/network restart from the command u can test connectivity by pinging outward to the internet like google.com or yahoo.com if u receive a response ur online,,,

Is there a Windows XP equivalent of the Linux Desktop Workspaces ?
Q. In Linux desktops, there is a notion of multiple workspaces. These workspaces reduce the cluttering of active applications. In Windows, often too many applications are shown in the start bar that it gets too confusing to identify which application is which.

For example, one may open several Word document. On the start bar, the user could only see a lot of active Word application running. Therefore, there is no quick way of getting to the right instance of Word quickly. Segregating the intances into different workspaces would help as in Linux.

A. I know the kind of thing you mean, I remember that from using UNIX at Uni. Anyway, there's no way to do that with XP 'out of the box' but there's a Powertoy written by MS themselves called "Virtual Desktop Manager" that gives you up to four virtual dekstops. I haven't tried it myself but it's free and worth a shot.
