Q. My college has a firewall which blocks p2p ports
A. Can't you choose whatever port you want your torrent client to use? Just choose one that is not in the blocked group of ports.
Is Ubuntu's install without a firewall application a problem or not?
Q. I ran iptables -L and did not see any rules set up. Am I missing something here? I run a web server with php, mysql and samba. I am new with Linux firewalls so I don't know if these are protected some other way with Ubuntu. I just installed firestarter which is easliy installed from the package manager but do I now have a double firewall some how?

A. I dont think it should be a problem, i am relatively new to Ubuntu myself and have never used the firewall that comes with it (well not knowingly anyway). If you installed your own firewall, it normally "turns off" the built in firewall, well in windows anyway it does, and takes over the duties. So a double firewall would not exist. Is it dapper, hoary or breezy that you are using, as it may make a difference to other posters. I think you are better off posting your query on the ubuntu forums.
